Hi I would like to know what do you think about this drama with Conor and UFC which we've seen some time ago. Here is translation of my column. Do you agree with me? What do you think about it? You can find original text on MMA.PL - one of the biggest MMA websites in Poland.
McGregor Saga! Episode 100 000?
Recently, I’ve been seeing McGregor in the media more often than Kardashians. MMA world lives and breathes drama with Conor and UFC as a main characters. I can see surfeit. It is bad for UFC, bad for the fighters, bad for the MMA world. Aren’t we all helpless?
People love dramas, even this particular one. Even when there is too much talk about superstar and federation argument, something dictates us to find out, what’s going on. You’ve got enough, but you can’t walkabout. Whether news is valuable or not, it depends on many factors. One of news value is continuity – possibility of creating story easy to tell. Audience waits for next episodes, because it continues before it’s very eyes.
In McGregor’s case we’ve got situation similar to those we can find on TMZ. Someone cheated on someone, someone fought, someone said “sorry” and then they started fucking… Fighter accuse UFC, journalists try to find out, what’s wrong, Dana White says some stuff, someone else gives comment and so on. We can hear bunch of of different stories. Who knows maybe in the future we’ll hear about dragons being involved in this drama. Everything is about one fighter, who is 8th in P4P rankings, but his image creates a lots of money.
I’ve got enough. I can feel that people are tired of this “soap opera”. On the one hand everything is OK, there is some interest, on the other hand I can see balance on a thin red line – line of “pissing off the fan”. Next is only less interest in UFC, less interest in MMA news. You’d like to see something less irritating. Also Irish guy can miscalculate. McGregor in every news makes me tired. There’ll be a time of reducing his media presence out of concern for his good. Other valuable fighters can feel a little bit unnoticeable. This won’t help UFC in employee-employers relations. UFC shows that one anxious, cocky man play with UFC owners and CEO. There is a dilemma, how much McGregor can, and how much Dana White can. Just not to destroy UFC from the inside. Other people can think about the situation: “UFC is weak. If you’re famous and cocky, you can play by your rules”.
Sometimes I wonder, what would happen if media boycott all this sham between McGregor and the UFC. And then I notice that… there’s no chance! These are news that interest fans. You can think that this argument has no sense, but people are interested in it. Maybe a little pissed off but interested. There always will be someone who would like to know what was said by McGregor, what Lorenzo Fertitta thought, what Dana White did. Even if you don’t like Conor, you would feel the need to know a little bit more about the situation. Even if you’re aware of “soap opera” mechanism, it won’t help.
The problem should be solved by McGregor and UFC. Media are addicted to Conor and show everything that can interest fans. They can’t boycott this “soap opera” and inform only when something significant happens. It has to be drama. Curiosity and emotions outweigh rationality. McGregor keeps us in suspense like Hitchcock did in his movies.
