Who wants to own a Mayweather gym?
I do.

http://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/...weather-aims-franchising-boxing-gyms-us-world

The cost to build out the gyms are projected to be $70,000 for an existing gym structure and $200,000 from the ground up. New owners are also required to pay a one-time $25,000 franchise fee and to pay 6 percent of income in a royalty fee back to Mayweather.
The classes include boxing, speed and agility work, and virtual reality with Mayweather.

Actually might look into the logistics of it all. I have been contemplating of opening up a boxing gym myself.

Based on what I see just in the OP tho, I would be better off just opening it with my own name.

Has this ever worked? Xtreme Couture died a death everywhere except the home location in Vegas, and the one satellite location here in Toronto (which was starved of MMA gyms ten years ago, hence why it survived).

pretty cheap when you consider what a mcdonalds or UPS franchise costs.

Interested in how the VR is going to be, if it's just a setup space for a Vive or more to it. Currently doing software development work for a company who is opening a VR gym this fall and pretty excited about it.

Isn't it like $1m to get a McDonalds?
And you have to be on a waiting list or something?

My friend knew a guy who got one and said you make alot of money of it, which makes sense since McDonalds are always busy.

Hmm, boxing gyms don't seem particularly profitable, I wonder if the Mayweather name will be strong enough.

Will I be able to learn the shoulder roll at these gyms?

Thanks in advance

i don't think there has ever been much money in it. my first few boxing gyms were free and they barely had 5 regulars. generally, no one really wants to work hard, even at the "best" gyms, most of it's a social thing, kinda like church. I'm sure each and every gym/location is as different as our fingerprints but overall, it's not a good way to make money. when i joined the school of Bruce Lee's highest ranking instructor, i took it seriously, more seriously than most and even though there were no dues, i watched as students dropped out at a 90% rate. Work isn't all fun, alot of it is just plain boring really and when people have bills/family's/jobs it's hard as hell to put time into something like that. As far as I know, most of Bruce's students did not make money when they tried to teach and that's with the benefit of being able to use his name. Bruce, however, at one point demanded all schools closed and never wanted his stuff taught for profit. Of course, people being people, they all betrayed that eventually. Why did Bruce want all his schools shuttdown? he said himself that he didn't want his ideas perverted and he realized there was no way to teach what he was trying to teach on any kind of mass scale. In the years where I've gotten into mma, most of the pros have made a living either training or opening up their own gym where they train, i don't know their finances. I don't know where they got the money to open but I do know none of it's easy. Personally, i always thought I'd never train people if I couldn't do it properly because i've seen all of these schools, all of them, pretty poorly run, the owners have always been lazy while they shout orders, take people's money and live off of them. I could never be so phony with people and I am too sincere to do that. Most of these guys lie right through their teeth whenever they feel like it, i can't do that. so, maybe if things are right I'll help someone, you never know.

they'll have some jackass showing his version of it and it won't work because most guys don't have the experience or the talent. that's how those things go.

i wouldn't doubt that for a second, a business like that is truly a full time job. I knew a restaurant owner and he had to work all the time, it's a tough business but with a corporation like micky d's it probably wouldn't be as hard as opening up a regular greasy spoon.

This will work for Mayweather who gets free money but not for the poor souls who invest in it. Sure name recognition is a marketing factor but its so small in martial arts compared to the social aspect and plain askissing you have to do as a gym owner for years so that you get the people who love the sound of being a "fighter" without the interest to train.

And if someone wants to learn boxing serious he will soon look out for the best coaching team no matter the name of the gym.

Thats why mediocre gyms often succeed who do a lot of ground work.

it seems to be a headache all the way around, i've thought about it, and, with age, i've realized that the people at the top have plenty of headaches all their own. if they do have a fighter who is successful they have to constantly worry about that fighter getting bigheaded, wanting more money, just going to negotiate a better situation elsewhere. it's also hard to control people, really hard, as i said, hard work is not glmourous, fun or anything but tedious and boring. most people that i've seen do not really train all that hard, but they all THINK they do, and they have to worry about all the partying these idiots do. It doesn't look fun when you think of it. You can't really control other people at all times and.., that's not to mention the lawsuits when some moron breaks someones neck or pokes someone in the eye which happens. I tend to think it's more about the ego and power than the money because there really is no money in it for most people.

And I bet all the gyms stay open and carry the Mayweather name forever and ever, amen. A testament to his greatness

In the central valley in California the casinos are sponsoring local Boxing training centers.

Hey, that's really interesting.

I've done game Dev and technical demonstration work with the vive and am interested in ideas around using VR as a training tool.

Can you reveal any more?

Can't talk too much about details of the inner workings right now but here's a video of the product our agency is working on for the company, mainly working on mobile app stuff now:

Whilst on that waiting list you are expected to be an 'employee'. A condition of becoming a franchisee is minimum 1 yr experience. Makes sense, means you hit the ground running and have a understanding of their systems.

If these are supposed to be boxing "fitness" gyms, then i see this not working at all. when i think of a boxing fitness gym, i think of women. at least that is who it seems like it would be marketed to. if that's the case, i just dont see it considering his popularity among the ladies is probably less than stellar. i guess it doesnt matter for floyd if he doesnt have money risked, but no way in hell would i open my own
