But not 10/10 perfect. I thought a bit of it was overdone characterisation. Too polar, too extreme. Not his acting necessarily though, more the character.
But the acting can only be as good as the character

I need to rewatch True Detective S1. Hard to believe it was 10 years ago when it first aired.

I recently watched Lincoln Lawyer. This was when Matt was in his slump and it still was pretty good, and you could already see a bit of Rust Cohle in that performance.

It's fantastic. Also think it's the last great show I've seen. Nothing really hits like this anymore. Anyway, his character's nihilistic worldview is quite intriguing and people forget but he's also pretty funny earlier in the season. Dude is Captain Bringdown at the highest level. The way Woody looks at him like "What the fuck man?" is hilarious.

Great performance and it’s layered. Definitely hit around a streak of performances for him that showed he actually had some range outside of romance roles. ‘Killer Joe’ and some others really let him cook as an actor. Even being able to steal a scene from Leo in ‘Wolf’ was impressive especially since Leo put on an absolute fucking show himself in that movie.


I’d like to see Matt in a really well done western with some other great actors.. like some ‘Unforgiven’ or ‘Tombstone’ level shit. Him and a guy like Tim Olyphant are on my list for something along these lines. But no one is really putting together Westerns like this atm.. a shame
