Both Baeza and Felder referred to Brown as a “legend” post-fight??

Perhaps this word is being thrown around too freely these days...

<{yearp}>

If any of you agree that Matt “17 losses” Brown is a legend, please enlighten everyone as to why...

I missed this one.

Wouldn't say a legend but he has been in some good fights and been around seemingly forever.

I think a grizzled vet that puts on exciting fights can be considered a legend, yes

He is a legend. Some of you guys make your own "elite" definitions for everything. A legend in a sport is just someone who has been at it for a long time and made a decent name for themselves.

TS is casual
But I'll agree that this wasn't a veteran performance from Brown. He had to know that he is not as fast as when he was younger and definitely much slower than this kid... So he needed to get past the first and to push for more clinches and wresting... I don't know, it didn't look that he was prepared well. Just his old gameplan to get to the clinch and elbow his opponent, but a lot slower and lumbering and with worse chin.

he's a legend for people who have been watching for awhile. has a ton of fights. won everyone money against Erick Silva. he's definitely a legend if cowboy is a legend

Diego Sanchez, Jim Miller, Joe Lauzon, Spencer Fisher etc.

All these guys are legends. Are they the best fighters of their time? No but they deserve respect for a ton of great fights.

Matt Brown is in this category as well.

They are honoring his longevity and the wars he has been thru.

You know they are not saying he is one of the best MMA fighters ever right? They are acknowledging what Brown has done in the UFC

Diego won the Ultimate Fighter and was a legit contender for years.

The others are not legends.

That sounds more like “journeyman”.

"Legend" does get thrown around too much, but honestly it kind of makes sense. You have to have some term for people who have been around for a really long time and had some success. To put it into perspective, I just looked it up and Brown has been in the UFC, and only the UFC since 2008 just under 12 years, and in that time he's had 26 fights. Including one good win streak that got him all the way up to fighting elite competition in the division.

I don't know if legend is the right word necessarily, but you gotta call guys like him/diego etc something to differentiate them from the rest.

Was gonna comment but the posts above have covered it well.

How about “respected veteran”.

Looked up the definition of legend and I wouldn't categorize him as one lol.

Because he listens to horrible heavy metal music because he's cool.

You could say that about a lot of guys. Fight in the ufc, get cut, fight elsewhere, come back on and on and on. These guys fought for a long time, and often, and against "UFC Competition". Mixed results for sure, but both Matt Brown and Diego Sanchez and probably a few others got to the point of actually fighting elite guys too. Respected Veteran isn't quite enough IMO.
