Matt Brown.....a legend? Come on now....

Well to be fair "legend" is a word that is wildly overused in just about every form of sport and entertainment these days. It's really not his fault that he meets a definition of a word as it's used and abused today.

Both Baeza and Felder referred to Brown as a “legend” post-fight??

Perhaps this word is being thrown around too freely these days...

If any of you agree that Matt “17 losses” Brown is a legend, please enlighten everyone as to why...
Theres sub categories of legend.. cmon now be real

The fights that he had will be talked about for years to come. The guy had a ridiculous run in the UFC with the way he fought. Is he an all time great? Of course not. Did he put on memorable fights and pure excitement for ages? Yup. Easily one of the most fondly remembered WW fighters from the past 15 years. I think more highly of Matt Brown than better fighters like Hendricks, Condit, Rory, Woodley, for his consistency and the way he fought.

Dude fought in the UFC 26 times over 13 years and had a 5 fight KO streak at one point. Only 5 fights went to a decision. One of the most brutal finishes in UFC history against Diego. Barely a boring fight. Guy was a pure savage. That's enough for me.

His welter run was monsterous. He was murking everyone in the division not named Condit, Lawler or Hendricks.

They guy went from a heroin addict to the very top of ufc. Is he fedor? No. But hes definately the hero of his story and thats legandary. Ur a clown

Look up the definition yourself genius
I did before I posted. I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt but every definition (other than a map legend) applies to Matt Brown in the context of MMA.

That's just the truth. Sorry dude.

He looked good in a 5 round war with prime Lawler. That alone deserves legend status

For me a legend is someone who seems almost unreal in their abilities, reputation, or stories. He doesn't fit that bill for me. I don't feel like there many I would consider legends. I consider is a very prestigious group.

A legend in a sport is just someone who has been at it for a long time and made a decent name for themselves.

Sorry, but that doesn't really sound like a 'legend'. When Brown finally retires, he'll be quickly forgotten. A legend is never forgotten.

Diego Sanchez, Jim Miller, Joe Lauzon, Spencer Fisher etc.

All these guys are legends. Are they the best fighters of their time? No but they deserve respect for a ton of great fights.

Matt Brown is in this category as well.

Disagree entirely. In other sports, "Legend" means something. Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson...legends. Horace Grant, Latrell Spreewell, Alan Huston...not legends.

Gatekeepers are not legends, no matter how long they hang around.

It's a nicety.

Brown is a journeyman who was once tapped out 4 times in 5 fights. In his prime, he was able to put on showcase fights against guys who didn't really belong in the UFC. Against higher caliber talent, he was ALWAYS outmatched.

He doesn't belong on contract anymore, despite clearly still being game and willing. He is not a UFC caliber fighter and he should move on to greener pastures.

Personally I'd like to see him stop taking head trauma, but if he wants to stick around MMA a bit longer it should be against more appropriate competition in another org.

If you're a hardcore JBG fan then Matt Brown is certainly a fucking legend. The dude has been in so many exciting brawls over the years.

You should really think before you speak. Alot of legit legends have quite a few losses.

Much like the legend they just spent 15 minutes talking about...

Those legends may have a lot of losses, but they also have long lists of accomplishments or an aura about them. Wanderlei, Chuck, Fedor, Couture, GSP, Anderson...Legends. Guys like Matt Brown, Chris Lytle, Jeremy Stephens...not so much.

Legends are talked about long after they're gone. Are you going to be waxing nostalgic about Matt Brown 5 years from now?

Absolutely

It's not about how good you were, it's about how long you participated.

I remember when his record in the UFC was 13-11. I wrote him off thinking he'd be sent walking papers. He somehow managed to turn his career, not by much, but he was pretty entertaining. I love seeing the gif of him crumpling Sanchez.

He’s a JBG legend.
