I keep meaning to make a YT video on this, but here are my notes...as much as they make sense
!!
- on shining it has jack bored and there is black teddy on floor right where haloran gets killed
- also, shining is we see things around us everyday and put them into a horror book
- then end jack freezes to death <-- in the car ride up they talked about the donner party!!! They ate each other up and froze and got cabin fever!!!
^ this is all talked about in the first 20 mins of movie
^^ basically this is total recall when the smarmy guy tells us what will happen in the rest of the movie
- the whole playgirl reading then the weird bear bj
- indian burial ground
- tony is just an imaginary friend, jack takes it to be more
^ lot of talk about a subjective camera outside of all the characters....like a 3rd person omniscient author? An unrealiable narrator sticks to one person
the narrator, a camera doing this to multiple characters means it is being written from outside the characters
whenever jack sees a ghost there is a mirror...because he is seeing himself...the characters and situations he created
kubrick asked king if he believed in ghosts or something like that, as the movie is about a writer who creates a horror movie...
..so if he believed in ghosts he would more likely put ghosts in it and that is how jack is freed from freezer
the dead eyed stare by jack is not him going crazy, it is him imagining scenes from the book in his head
! Charles Grady is beginning of movie but Delbert later and Delbert in book because jack is fictionalizing the story, and long fades are real to book, once he gives long stare all rest is book writing http://faqtheshining.blogspot.com/2008/08/who-rolls-yellow-ball-to-danny-as-he.html
talks about inconsistencies but this is him making a book, the information from the beginning like indian burial grounds and grady he uses to make his book. Change names as well and ages.
-HOW ABOUT wendy says Jack has been sober so long to doctor, but I think that Jack tells the bartender a different number of months..VERIFY FIRST
-the set in hotel not making sense...like a writer making it up....
-
- he says that in gold room scene with just him and bartender, that the furniture moves between takes/cuts
- like reality vs fictionalize in his head
^ he also said that kubrick insisted his daughter two seats down from jack stared at him, is this what
his daughter really did when jack (and kubrick) sat around thinking of story?
twins say come and play with us forever and ever, then jack tells danny he wants to stay there forever and ever
- like he was making up something in his book and saying it later
the black teddy bear and haloran and also notice the tricycle WHILE jack is throwing the ball and brainstorming ideas.
the tennis ball rolls to danny then he goes to room 237...same ball jack was throwing while brain storiming...
jack knows that lloyd is lloyd because he is jack's fictional character
^at about 2:50 he talks about seeing pairs of women and the wall paper there jack sees it
and it is only ever seen again when Danny sees the dead twins <-- jacks stares at them and puts it into his book
^at 3:32 woman is in red hallways that we never see before...right when shit hits the fan...hm....
^^ then danny is chased into the maze by his mom....like jack does in the BOOK
^a lot about jack throwing tennis ball and comparing it to the ax in the bathroom door...almost like he
is imagining this scene while throwing the ball
^jacks shirt backwards in mirror same mirror as redrum
^on the maze, the maze jack looks down on is larger and more intricate than the model he stands at...
almost like he was making it better for his book
! jack sees a ghost he is always looking in a mirror, like he is talking to himself...this is what you do
when you write dialogue
! before danny goes in his dad's room and gets creeped on, the tv is unplugged
! in beginning, jack is waiting to be interviewed and tony says he already got the job.. like Jack is fantasizing about getting the job already ... cocky
but tony would not know that as it has not happened

Scorsese for me due to quantity of great films. Kubrick is something special though. When I used to smoke SK films were by far some of the best to watch baked out of my mind.
Yeah I agree. The departed too. Wolf of Wall Street. MS movies are easier to sit down and just watch at any point in the movie. I was just using Goodfellas as one particular example.
No one sits down to kill an hour and watches eyes wide shut or 2001. Those aren’t back ground noise movies you can maybe have on while you’re on the computer or cleaning up.
Entertainment wise I think The Shining and Full Metal Jacket definitely hold up as very re watchable, I'm guessing I'v seen those both at least a dozen times, probably more.
A lot of his most hyped up stuff does feature as log of very unsympathetic characters I'd agree, Travis is arguebly more likeble than most for all he does in that he's clearly seriously mentally ill, I think implied from Nam PTSD.
Kubrick isnt exactly known for making warm films but Dave Bowman, Barry, Wendy and Joker are I think pretty easy to get behind.
