Mark Coleman was a brute who never quit

Really I think Coleman's losses in the UFC were about cardio(and a questionable decision sv Rizzo) with guys basically just locking him up on the ground and waiting for him to gas in long fights, I don't think it was until Nog turned up that he was actually outclassed.

His chin/heart is definitely underrated though, Brock had the chin as well and maybe better but lacked the heart.
Of all the wrestlers in MMA, Coleman has weirdly had the worst cardio. Maybe he was just older for all his fights? Just very strange to me, every other wrestler usually has cardio advantage.

Coleman always had a drinking problem, ever since he was a teenager. He was an alcoholic almost all his life. Where did you get all that "clean living" stuff?

That Pete Williams fight was terrible, Pete kept committing fouls and Big John never called him out on them.

The following is a running log of times and infractions committed in the fight and the warnings given by referee Big John McCarthy (BJM);
:35 Coleman gets deep in on a take down and lifts Williams into the air; Pete Williams then reaches over the top of the cage to prevent the takedown and is warned to “let go of the top” on the way down to the to the mat Williams is grabbing the fence in order to lesson the ensuing blow – WARNING WILLIAMS
1:17 Pete WIlliams from the bottom position grabs the cage in order to help move his hips into a better angle so that he could land the above mentioned arm bar – No warning
1:55 Pete Williams from the bottom position grabs the cage in order to move his body away from the fence – No warning
2:08 – 2:15 Pete Williams from the bottom position grabs the cage multiple times in order to change his position – No warning
2:32 Pete Williams from the bottom grabs the cage in order to change his position – No warning
2:44 Pete Williams from the bottom position grabs the cage in order to change his direction – No warning
3:47 Pete Williams from the bottom position clinches the cage to alleviate top pressure from Coleman – No warning
3:54 Pete Williams from the bottom position changes his entire body direction due to a cage grab -No warning
4:50 Pete Williams grabs the cage in order to change his position on the bottom – No warning
5:07 Mark Coleman grabs the cage opposite side of BJM to maintain balance – No warning
5:35 BJM stands the fighters up, Colemans activity had not ceased since being in the top dominant position.
8:34 Mark Coleman gets a takedown, Pete Williams grabs the cage in order to stand back up – No warning
8:55 A standing Mark Coleman has Pete Williams pressed up against the cage, Coleman grabbed the cage – WARNING COLEMAN
9:05 BJM again tells Coleman to keep his hands off the cage – WARNING COLEMAN
9:11 With his back against the fence Pete Williams avoids a take down by grabbing the fence in plain view of BJM – no warning
9;22 While pressing Williams against the cage BJM again tells Coleman to keep his hands off the fence – WARNING COLEMAN
9:52 Pressing WIlliams against the cage BJM yells at Coleman to keep his hands off of the fence – WARNING COLEMAN
9:56 Pressing Williams against the cage, BJM informs Coleman that if he grabs the fence again that he is “fouling him out next time that’s it” – WARNING COLEMAN
10:08 Coleman gets deep on a takedown, Williams with both hands grabbing the fence was able to defend the takedown due to the help of clinching the cage – no warning
10:15 Coleman hits another takedown, Williams is able to defend due to both hands grabbing the fence; Coleman readjusts and has Williams mid air tugging at him in order to pry him from the fence, BJM tells Williams to let go of the fence; “there you go” was what BJM said once Pete released – WARNING WILLIAMS
12:38 Williams lands a kick to Coleman’s face that will be featured at the introduction of every UFC for the next 10 years.
– Prior to landing the head kick, Williams is throwing open fingered jabs at Colemans face – no warning

Likely true but I don't think most of that was even illegal back then

I think a combination of him carrying a load of muscle and having one gameplan, he would always be trying to take someone down.

Pride Coleman was I'd guess at least 10lbs of muscle lighter though and I think you saw the effect on his cardio in the 2000 GP.

Good point, but someone like Brock had way better cardio. Maybe Brock just had a better frame to deal with the muscle.

Even on the juice kevin was way too small for the Big Cat. During that same tournament Tom fought an even smaller guy in Bustamante and couldn’t pass his guard the whole fight. Shows how good Busta was.
Sadly Busta will be forgotten about as time goes on.

I was a big fan of Hammer House back in the day (except Baroni, turns out I was psychic) and I just found this wrestling gif of Mark that shows him brute forcing some guy's anatomy into new adventures:

It goes nicely with his famous trading card:

But the time Mark really blew me away and made me a whole new kind of fan was when old man Coleman had his rematch with Shogun and, no matter how exhausted, he NEVER QUIT BRINGING THE FIGHT TO SHOGUN. Usually fighters take a beating and keep coming forward, but they're just a punching bag and aren't a threat at all. Or they gas and they stop trying to do anything. But I had never seen a fighter (known for gassing) totally gas out and keep coming forward, to the point that he was actually starting to exhaust Shogun. Considering that cardio has always been Coleman's kryptonite, it was one of the most amazing displays of persistence I've ever seen. I know how much it sucks to be completely exhausted and in pain and how tough you have to be to force yourself ahead.

That night Coleman became a fighter that I sometimes think about in hard times. There are only a few fighters who have had that effect on my life.

Share your best memories, Sherbros!
Some people felt the ref saved Shogun that night by ending the fight quickly. I never rewatched yet though.

What you described also reminds me of Luke's last performance.

Never really liked Mark while he was active, mostly because how he behaved when Shogun broke his arm,was total jackass
After when he retired and all,i can say he is a good guy, real legit old timer.Had top fights and was around in pride prime time.

There was nothing wrong with how he behaved in the Shogun fight. When he took Shogun down,he didnt know Shogun's arm broke. He was trying to finish Shogun,a Pride ACE that he was expected to lose to,and couldnt at all understand why the ref was stepping in just as he got the best position he could get. Ninja slid into the ring,Coleman thought he was in there to attack him. Then Baroni and the refs kind of calm the situation down, until Wanderlei who had been running to the ring when Ninja and Coleman faced off,re-ignited the whole thing all over again. Baroni took wanderlei down and he and Coleman kept him there until the officials calmed the whole thing down.

So it was a big clusterfuck of crazy shit one thing after another

I'll have to rewatch it,have bad memory of incident besides that "main" sequence.Like i dont remember Wand being in there in that at all

He came in after the the ninja/Coleman fracas was being broken up,but the cameras didnt show alot of it,cos it really didnt paint one of their biggest stars,Wand,in a positive light. He got taken down by a welterweight while an old HW stepped on his neck, while he was helpless to do anything about it.

Coleman: I stepped on his neck and he looked at me like he wanted to kill me,but he couldnt get up though

I watched it,they didnt show lot yes.Dont know if there is footage from another angle where more is seen
Aside all of that, when the ref clearly stopped the fight he tossed the ref for no reason and acted like jerk, only then does more people step into the ring obviously triggered with that action of his

Killing mode isnt a light switch to turn on and off. This was the one position he needed to get Shogun in and the ref stopped the flava.

Was listening to Kurt Angle on Joe Rogan's podcast and he said that Coleman was by far the strongest wrestler he faced
+
Kurt Angle recently on Rogans podcast . Said Coleman was strongest guy he ever wrestled and Kerr the most physically gifted .
For reference, Kurt Angle rasslin' against Coleman's fellow Hammer House team member Mark Kerr =>

Exacty.
Wanderlei had the perfect view for Mauricio's arm breaking; we can see him with a "O face" in the background next to Takanori ''The Fireball Kid" Gomi

Plus, when Mark Coleman finally saw the tape backstage, he immediately went outside his room to try to find Shogun and apologize, he really looked like he had realized he had made a grave mistake

At the time I can see him being incredulous that the ref was stopping him there. To his credit he did not try to hit Shogun again,he just didnt know at all what happened and had been in kill mode. Then Ninja came in and all that pent up energy went to him hahaha
