Ever been in a book store or library (or any other specific type of store) and just have the urge to take a big ole shit? Apparently there's a scientifically unproven but very real phenomenon called Mariko Aoki phenomenon

The Mariko Aoki phenomenon (青木まりこ現象, Aoki Mariko genshō) is a Japanese expression referring to a sudden urge to defecate that is felt upon entering bookstores. The phenomenon is named after Mariko Aoki, a woman who described the effect in a magazine article published in 1985. According to Japanese social psychologist Shōzō Shibuya, the specific causes that trigger a defecation urge in bookstores are not yet clearly understood.[1] There are also some[who?] who are skeptical about whether such a peculiar phenomenon really exists at all, and it is sometimes discussed as one type of urban myth.

Urban myth my ass; everything i go into a library or chapters i have the urge. Hit me in 2nd year university. Since then, almost every single time I've entered anything with a massive amount of books, I have to test out the plumbing.

what say you sherberry; what store triggers your tummy?

Imagine being born with that exact name at this point in time.

And yea, I get that effect several times a week.

I think it probably was real but not much anymore.

People used to read books while they took a shit. For many people, that was the only time they read a book. So their brain was associating books with shitting.

I think it's not that real anymore because everyone reads their phone while shitting now. But because we're always on our phone the rest of the day too, our brains don't associate it with the act of shitting.

Not personally but my dad said he had something similar caused by going into the garage. He also told me that if he needed to go he's make a cup of cofee and head to the garage with it as a surefire cure. Doesn't have that effect on me so unlikely to be hereditary.

I always get the urge to shit when reading Kawabata or Mishima. My theory is that shame and the lack of hugs make your tummy rumble.

Yea, but it's not a problem because there's loads of quiet places and a shit ton of paper....

probably a reflex from when you were a kid. Most likely you were potty trained while reading a coloring book because you couldn't read and couldn't color and somehow that made you take a shit.

It doesn't happen to me, and I've never heard of it before. But I'd be willing to bet something repressed from childhood is the culprit that connects that musty/dusty smell with dropping heat.

I suffer from Shinya Aoki phenomenon. Where I flip the bird to random strangers then I curl up into a ball while they beat the shit out of me.

Never had it happen but I do believe the phenomenon. There are guys I work with who I swear save all their shits for work. If u added up all their time on the clock for smoking and shitting, they gotta be over a year's salary earned for these two activities.

I vaguely remember an article on Apple News similar to this but advising not to pee in the shower because the brain will associate the sound of water with peeing and will subconsciously pee when hearing that sound.

This phenomena happens to everyone all the time.

How many times did you have a slight urge to pee, then as you get close to the bathroom the urge gets stronger, then the bathroom is closed and now you have to pee super bad?

Whereas other times you have a slight urge to pee and there's no bathrooms nearby, and your body just holds it for a long time without much problem.

It's because you brain associates the bathroom with peeing so as you get closer to it, it makes the urge stronger.

Sometimes I fill my water bottle, and then need to pee. Most of the time I pee before running errands and rarely need to pee in public.

Twice I was stuck in several hour long traffic due to dumbass with load too tall that clipped the overpass and created traffic mess. Luckily didn't need to pee. Recently with the tsunami warning, in the afternoon, everyone tried to go home at the exact same time and seems like everywhere was traffic jam for hours.

Maybe the only time he would read was when he was on the shitter and after some years of this, if he was looking at books or reading his body would go into 'time to shit' mode?

Nothing like having some weird condition named after you.
