Marijuana and BJJ

I avoid getting high before classes because of the smell/I dont want to be disrespectful.

(This is when I train at the main Renzo academy, my regular training spot)

However, when I train at home with my brother, or at my friends academy near my home, I get high before.

This helps my understanding of the subtle movements, aka - hip movements, elbow tightnesss, etc.

Also, my brother and I are dead even when we roll normally. We hardly ever tap each other.

When I am high, I tap him and others like no tomorrow. (my body moves on its own)

I do it after class. Ive gone to open mats once or twice after smoking, but its not for me. Im an end of the day smoker-the hour or two before you go to bed, once youve got everything you need to do for the day done. For me its much more enjoyable knowing Ive got nothing to do other than relax and think about my day.

I couldn't imagine toking and doing anything physical. I don't even like walking when I'm high, much less grappling.

I've never smoked and the gone and trained but have been told that it's quite the experience. However, I do toke up quite often after training. I don't believe all the "it kills your cardio" bullshit. I smoke quite often yet still have great cardio.

On NYE my brother and I both got blitzed into the next dimension and then had the urge to practice some leg kicks. Apparently we decided it was the best idea to stand and trade leg kicks without blocking for over 5 minutes. Needless to say, we couldnt walk the next day.

I trained with this guy that would always come to class high. He would always ask me if I smoked because I always rolled really slow with him. He was really chill, and I really don't have a problem with people smoking. Just as long as it isn't all they talk about all the time.

no,

im slow enough as it is... id be alseep if blazed up before class...

secondly, I find it amusing people listen to advise of Bravo and Rogan over the recommendations of sport scientists and doctors...

let me give you my opinion

weed opens your mind, lets you see jiu jitsu from a different perspective, from that perspective you can see and learn things that may not have otherwise occurred to you sober

tho if you smoke too much, you lose the insight and creativity because it stagnates.

last of all - any smoking is gonna hurt your cardio making it harder to compete. so in the long run you cant really be a smoker

I smoke; almost every day. I usually don't smoke for a few hours before training. I know some people claim it helps them on the mats, but it really does the opposite for me. If I am blazed I really can't keep my mind on rolling. The only time I ever went to class completely blazed, I started shrimping in the wrong direction (started the drill facing the wrong way, with my head against a wall and no where to go). I realized what I was doing before anyone really noticed thankfully. I felt like an idiot, rightly so, and I told myself no more smoking before training.

buddly-do-right tip of the day: eat an orange after, kills the smell on the hands & face.

Correct sir. Purell (THC is alcohol soluble) also works quite well but doesn't help your breath.

I always roll high, train high, compete high. Really as high as possible without being disrespectful. If you smoke weed I don't understand why you wouldn't, if you haven't yet you probably don't need to start.

Oh and I haven't competed yet, but my friends who feel similarly about rolling, do not smoke weed before stepping in the cage. The morning of, but not for several hours before the fight.

I don't think I would either, it is not because of the striking. Unlike pure grappling or even MMA sparring, a real MMA match you want to be extremely aggressive and downright bloodthirsty. You want to be in a frame of mind that you want to hurt another human being.

Marijuana is not conducive to that!

i never smoke before practice because i feel i'm more injury prone while high.

Best is to be like Dock Ellis and do LSD before you roll

That way you may think you are wrestling with an anaconda or gorilla. It makes it more interesting

i like a smoke but i can't imagine anything worse than someone trying to cut off the blood supply to my brain when i'm high. i'm curious as to wheter it could improve my performance coz it sure does on xbox live. I think i'll just keep the two things seperate though.

Smoking before playing Call of Duty on xbox puts me in the zone. Quieter and hungrier, but in the zone nonetheless.
