Maintaining Power Post Powerlifting

I just found that after I got to a certain weight, lifting exacerbated those problems in a way that the higher volume/lower weight KB stuff doesn't. I probably could have gotten the same effect by just squatting and deadlifting lower weights for more reps and not going to failure, though KBs are a lot more convenient if that's the sort of training you're looking to do.

Improper form is a likely culprit.

Keeping up close to current level of strength, while improving conditioning would take...significant volume.

My advice would be to take a very minimalist, very submaximal approach to lifting the barbells, and then use the other implements to take up the majority of your training for at least a period. Just being more mentally fresh can have value.

Poor flexibility and form will ruin your joints. Heavy barbell movements will not. I would look into improving mobility and form before abandoning an entire facet of training. Kettlebells are good but only as augmentation of a strength and conditioning program. Unless you want to shell out hundreds for some decent sized ones for strength training.

Goblet squatting a 200lbs. kettlebell is now on my bucket list.

Throw isos and static lifts in your program to maintain your basal tone and maximal tension.

I think I remember you answering that question with just about the same numbers a year or so ago. Why front squats?

I haven't improved in the last year. I've maintained with a two day split because I was running up against the pain back then. I've dabbled in pushing but haven't been comfortable.

I don't have the shoulder flexibility for back squats. I spent a couple months doing the shoulder mobility work suggested in Starting Strength and strong Lifts and went to therapy, but made no changes in ROM.

I don't think you need to squat and dead lift. I would pick one for the majority of my training.

My joints are as bad as it can get without disability and despite having a hook for a right arm I'm rarely in pain. Of course unless arthritis therapies stop progressing all that will end but I can train relatively heavy today, tomorrow and next week.

What do you mean you have a hook for an arm? Like an artificial arm with one of those hook hand things?

I have half ROM because of arthritis.

I personally feel that someone with lower strength levels can maintain relatively closer to their strength levels with just doing gpp. For example, someone totaling around 1500 lbs will likely experience a much larger drop when neglecting lifting vs. someone totaling 1000 lbs. Not being a dick here, but at your numbers I think you can neglect lifting without experiencing a huge hit.

In my experience this is true for me. I took a few weeks off because of a broken hand, went to the phillipines for a few weeks then just fucked around with kettlebells and running for a solid month before I hit the weights again.

After a month or so I was pretty much back to where I was. I can busst 1000 easy, but im not a 1500lb guy and probably never will be because I always take time off to follow other pursuits.

I can say though that when I do a lot of gpp, I come back much better than when I go hiking for a month or cycling for a month. 4-6 weeks of aerobic shit at a caloric deficit really messes with my strength lol.

Pavel just released an article on what exactly GPP is but the best part of the article was the idea of older style alatytic training where you do a short sub or near maximal short effort followed by a lot of active rest. I've been using this for my intervals and my recovery has been noticeably improved.

The context of that though in the article was for strength training.

Thanks for the tips gents. I haven't forgotten you. I'm just mulling it over.
