Maia Prayer Vigil

What exactly happened when Yakov reversed Maia from mount? It looked to me like Maia easily could have posted his arm to prevent the reversal no? Maybe his mind was on a submission?

I think people are being a bit harsh on Maia. I thought he did a decent job.

I think he is already on the death list, i expect him to be cut in the first loss.

A "git er done" performance from Maia. I think we all wanted more. A couple things:

  1. Why can't Maia cause more damage from mount? It seems like several minutes is more than enough to cause some swelling or cuts; few fighters can hold the position for long, and it seems like Maia doesn't do justice to it when he has it.
  2. Where's the armbar? All his setups seem telegraphed and labored, as opposed to say, Joe Lauzon, who is great at making his opponents fight for dear life to save their arm in the last 30 seconds of a round.

As another thought...I wonder if Maia wouldn't benefit from a heavy investment in the guillotine. It seems to be entirely missing from his arsenal, and yet it is one of the few subs that really presents itself from everywhere--and of course has a great track record in MMA.

Guys, Maia's career is basically done. He's only going to go down from here.

Time for us to invest ourselves in someone new. Like Chris Holdsworth.

That's one of the most dominant disappointing performances I've ever seen. :(
Yeah. I have so much respect for Maia based on shit like triangling Gonzaga, but that happened almost 10 years ago at this point, and it was pretty... underwhelming to see him "only" pass to mount 3 times, especially after Yakovlev's brains were scrambled by that punch.

Not inconceivable, but bear in mind that he has already lost 6 fights in UFC and is nowhere near the title picture in any weight division.

At this point in his career, getting cut probably wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen to him cause I doubt he needs money from UFC to make a living when he can do seminars, coaching, whatever.

What about Jacare?

Yeah him too, especially seeing as he's so high up the rankings already. With that said, at 35 years old this year, age is not on his side.

Man yall are bein real harsh on maia.... He didn't do that bad. I think because he is so idolized, peoples expectations were just too high.

It's not that he did badly, it's just that he is clearly no longer a title contender, and it wasn't the type of performance that gets people excited to watch non title contenders. So it's going to be hard maintain interest in his fights going forward, which is a shame since he's been one of my, and others, favorite fighters for about six years now.

mmm.. i still consider him as a guy in the running and I hope he gets a difficult opponent next.

I believe he just opened a large mma gym in brazil. I think he has the same issues are Gabriel Gonzaga, unless your training at a top mma camp you'll be at a disadvantage in todays mma/ufc. Jackson's, ATT or AKA

Nah. I expect a fighter in the title running to be able to control more than he did.

I'm not talking about position control. Maia is still a master at that. In fact that fight showed some slick guard passing STILL.

In the third round I thought Maia had a good chance of bring knocked out by headlkick and the final seconds he literally turned his back and ran.

That's not what I want to see out of a title contender when he fights a twenty year old in their FIRST UFC fight.

Alexander turns 30 next month.

Sorry. I meant 20 something. Even than I didn't know he was that old.

My point remains when you have that kind of advantage in the grappling department I don't expect the fight to be as competitive as it was.

If the fight went another 5 minutes you confident that Maia wouldn't have gotten KO'd?

I think if it were a 20 minute fight, Maia would have adjusted accordingly and still would have easily won the fight.

It's not like Yakov is a complete can. Yes he is making his UFC debut, but he is a master of sports in sambo and combat sambo who had a record of 21-4-1.

also, then* :D

Maia jumped the shark after the Sonnen trip to triangle. He could do nothing but go down hill from there...... Then you all orgasmed when he Fitch'd my boy Fitch.

You all deserve the Shields fight and the languishing ride into abscurity that is to follow!!
