Maia Prayer Vigil

I love Maia. I hate deifying and worshiping fighters, and getting really into the theme of that (like holding a "prayer vigil" or making spiritual comparisons for example) as if there need to be saviors for some archaic style vs style nonsense.

I like the idea of supporting the dwindling pack of pure BJJ guys at the top levels of MMA, but it rings a little hollow to me when there's so many other top BJJ players as well. I mean, Mike Pyle and TJ Waldburger are basically two BJJ fighters, as is Alexis Davis. Zach Makovsky's fight with Sampo featured rubber guard, De La Riva, butterfly guard, and x-guard. And Rousey is a judoka who has Rener Gracie in her corner! Heck, even Rory Macdonald is a black belt who used different butterfly variations to get back to his feet.

F*ck Maia :(

We need new pure grappling representatives in MMA.

I wonder why he gassed so hard though?

Could be that it took all he had just to hold a huge beast like rory down for 4mins.

Still rory if anyone should have been the one getting gassed by that round.
He did land some nice gnp though.

Hard to say where maia goes from this, ive always enjoyed his fights but i feel he is more of a muscler than a technical wizz.
If someone is stronger than him he jist gets shut down.

Not saying maia isnt very technical though, but his game is more about overwhelming you with pressure than using a more fluid and movement based aproach.

I think that one of the biggest factors in Maia's seemingly poor gas tank Saturday night was the amount of damage he took to the body. Rory landed some really hard body kicks in round 2, and shortly after the first one Maia's gas disappeared.

I'm 99.9% certain that this thread is a joke. You should relax.

I think he relaxed in the second part of round 1, he started as a beast laying the beating, but by the later parts Rory gained butterfly which allowed him to be relieved of all pressure as Maia tried to pass, he stopped hitting him and couldnt put the weight on.

I think people give too little credit to Rory in round 1.

Maia is one of my favorite fighters ever, but yeah this thread is kind of an F12 meme at this point.

Still rooting for him everytime out though. If he fixes that gas tank, he can beat anyone at 170lbs.

His takedowns seemed really sloppy against McDonald. I think he definitely can work on fixing this hole in his game first.

Those shots in the second and third were god awful, but I think he was already in zombie mode. If he could have managed to keep the same energy level throughout the fight, I think he would have won. But you know what, he did eat a huge liver kick, so credit to Rory for killing his energy level (or at the least contributing to putting Maia into zombie mode).

Maia is my favorite fighter... and I definitely want him to win.. but yeah. This thread is an f12 meme, and not to be taken seriously.

i was screaming at the tv to clinch with rory if he couldn't get a clean shot. obviously, i'm not the one eating those jabs.

If he wants to evolve his game he should leave his gym in Sao Paulo and spend some time in a high level camp in US training his wrestling.

Yeah. If he comes to the US he can learn to takedown high level talent like Chael Sonnen and Jake Shields.

It's sad that I've heard no praise for Rory's superb use of the butterfly guard to neutralize Maia and reverse him. That's next-gen BJJ for MMA, yet it's gone under the radar.

Are you talking about the third round? Maia was basically a corpse laying on top Rory. I was more surprised Rory couldn't get back to his feet sooner actually.

No, but he may be able to learn how to mix up boxing to get the TD like Cain Velasquez does. Striking is rising over wrestling as the dominant art right now, if you cant at least hang out in the strike department, no level of wrestling in the world will save you.

Jake and Chael both wrestled with Maia, Rory kept the distance and made Maia hopeless.

Aldo and JDS are also guys that completely neutralize even the highest level of wrestling with their striking, and the reason why Cain is champ is because his boxing is up to par with the best out there.

I think a lot of BJJ guy favoritism is directed towards actual Brazilians, or at least fighters who were BJJ experts prior to becoming MMA fighters. Chris Weidman has fantastic BJJ, but all you'll ever hear about is his wrestling (as if wrestling alone would let you compete with Galvao at ADCC), you'll never have BJJ fan boys adopt him as one of their own. Personally, I root for guys who go for lots of subs and who finish them with regularity, regardless of their BJJ background. Weidman, Forrest Griffin, Joe Lauzon, the Diaz bros, Chris Lytle, these guys had varying amounts of pure BJJ training but they all went for subs with regularity and finished more than a few. By the same token I don't have a lot of use (as a grappling fan) for guys with BJJ or Judo backgrounds who just stand and bang. Hector Lombard constantly disappoints me because he won't clinch and throw anyone, and K1 Maia was a disaster.
