Maia Prayer Vigil

No, but he may be able to learn how to mix up boxing to get the TD like Cain Velasquez does. Striking is rising over wrestling as the dominant art right now, if you cant at least hang out in the strike department, no level of wrestling in the world will save you.

Jake and Chael both wrestled with Maia, Rory kept the distance and made Maia hopeless.

Aldo and JDS are also guys that completely neutralize even the highest level of wrestling with their striking, and the reason why Cain is champ is because his boxing is up to par with the best out there.

While it ebbs and flows, the champions of HW, LHW, MW, one of the two WW title fighters, an FLW are all wrestling based fighters. And Cain totally took JDS out of his game with constant takedowns, I wouldn't hold that last title fight up as evidence for striking dominance at all.

Demian Maia will fight tonight on Fox Sports 1 against Alexander Yakovlev.

If he looses, I think he's going to be cut after losing to Jake Shields and Rory Mcdonald consecutively.

War Maia! He needs this win bad. Can't afford to lose to a debut'er. Can't believe he was on the cusp of a title shot just two fights ago. Hopefully he has worked on his cardio.

Yeah, how fortunes have turned for Maia. :( I think he's on his way out.

It wasn't his cardio.
HE GOT KICKED IN THE FUCKING STOMACH OVER AND OVER

Was I the only one that watched this fight? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

Thanks, I knew what I typed wasn't right. Was just too lazy to find the right word.

You're right about the kicks to the midsection having a huge impact but he also had a lot of time to recover and never did. That has part to do with bad cardio, imo.

It was a decent win, but Maia is clearly unable to hit top 5 WW anymore.

I feel like Maia's motivation, and his performances, take a nose dive whenever he loses momentum. When he's on a winning streak he uses his half guard, stays active at all times, even in to the third round, and forces the clinch really well. But when he isn't his bottom game disappears, he starts hanging out at mid range too long and he starts to fall apart late in the fight.

Still he looked good in the first half of the fight, and did what he needed to in the second half.

That's one of the most dominant disappointing performances I've ever seen. :(

maia just doesnt have it anymore or someone is giving him some really bad advice, may be he was on the verge of losing his job, but this win certainly doesnt assure him anything after this fight. May be he needed the winning bonus, who knows what were his motivations to pull a "shields" tonight, but this is not the fighter I was a fan of.
