BJ Penn doesn't hold anything but burritos these days. And IMO Maia's ADCC win is probably more transferable to MMA than BJ Penn's mundials.

Fuckin hell. When Demian Maia is looking to the ref to stand them up you know there is something wrong. He needs to get back to his roots. He's just winging punches these days, he never even tried anything on the ground. When he did grapple he did what he wanted easily, the escape from side, and also using butterfly get back to his feet. After spending 30 seconds looking at the ref to stand them up of course.

Forcing the grappling more also would have set up better strikes on the feet and got Weidman tired.

I think Maia is going to end up as a gate keeper in his division, testing the sub defense of young up-and-comers. Shame.

I was also shocked to hear he hasn't subbed anyone since 2009. Chael I think.

I reckon for his next fight he'll have Bisping (it was the original match-up and both are coming of losses), which is a bad fight for Maia.

At this point, I think I'll move my candle over to Palhares' section, IMO he's the best shot for elite BJJ in top 10 MMA at this point (arguable Jacare too)...nah, screw it, I'll keep supporting Maia but think Palhares has a better shot of breaking into high level MMA
