Maia Prayer Vigil

We finally get to see a BJJ expert use BJJ in their matches. Andre Galvao, Jacare, Xande etc have been trying to turn into strikers for some reason.

Hell yah, Maia was all over him like a cheap suit. You could see that toll that Maia's control took on his gas tank. Great stuff.

that was some beautiful grappling :icon_chee

Besides not finishing with a sub, his bjj was beautiful last night. Smooth take downs. guard passing, transitions to back...

He just needs to practice some ground and pound so he can punish his opponents when mounted. I don't know if GnP something is just natural for most guys(see guys like Jon Jones, Tito Ortiz, and even Lauzon last night was awesome with his GNP), but I sure hope Maia adds that to his game.

i think it was a good fight. i liked seeing maia a bit like a wrestler last night. he had take down and some top control with punches.

maia needs to quit talking about winning without hurting his opponent and just going in there to beat the shit out of him.

he gave up mount 2 times trying to go for sloppy armbars which is not good.

Maia was awesome last night, the only thing I suggest is that he start training with Joe Rogan so he can learn how to do an armbar

lol, I was thinking the same thing, as if Rogan knows how to do an armbar better than Maia!

Mario Miranda showed he has great submission defense and escapes and was no walkover opponent, but Maia clearly won the fight with very effective takedowns and top control.

As a student of BJJ, I light a candle for whoever and whenever Maia's next fight is.

Although there are fighters with better BJJ skills than Maia, I think he holds the flag for BJJ in mma. He sticks close to the BJJ principles. He goes for the takedown, improves position and goes for the submission. From his back he is always looking to submit or reverse.

He isn't particularly athletic compared to others in mma but manages to use his technique to win.

Until Roger competes in MMA more, then perhaps we will see a new person carrying the flag of BJJ.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Maia fight. Especially considering him giving up position to finish. War Maia!

It seemed joe was talking about maia falling to his back for the armbar without controlling the leg. To me it looked like maia was trying to take the arm while staying foreword and upright. Thats the way I was taught that armbar anyway. To me it looked like mario rolled out and maia didn't really mean to fall to his back for that armbar.

Any of you advanced guys have any incite?

Maia was monster yesterday. He just needs to work on his GnP so he has another way to finish fights.

His technique was supreme against a seemingly stronger more athletic grappler.

I think Joe wanted him to do the Spider Web position armbar.

To be honest, Marcello makes almost everybody look bad and that was the finals so you don't know what matches Mario had beforehand.

What are you talking about?

1. I was just asking if it was the same human being Maia fought last night.

2. Of course Garcia makes everyone looks bad, what does that have to do with anything?

3. It was most certainly NOT the finals. It was the very first match of the Absolute bracket of ADCC 2007 in NJ. (First as in the first match Marcelo and Mari had. Neither had faced an opponent yet in the Absolute.)

I'm on dubs and can't edit. What does anything you said have to do with my question?

Also, of course I know what matches they had beforehand. None in the Absolute. In their respective divisions, a simple google search would answer it, as this clip is several years old. I might have the wrong order, but Marcelo had already faced Mike Fowler, Kurt Pelligrino, George Sotiropoulos, and Pablo Popovitch. Miranda had fought Drysdale in the first round of the -99k weight class and lost.

I don't know why I went on that tangent, because it had less than nothing to do with my question.

The Miranda I saw last night looked like this one, but taller and lankier. I was just asking if it was the same guy. I'm pretty sure it is.

Im sorry, I presumed you chose that video to show that Mario wasn't a very good grappler. It probably is the same guy. The only other BJJ match I saw him in was one with Robert Drysdale but unfortunately it doesn't show the whole fight.

I have the DVD and I'm at home. I can watch it and tell you what happens?

It's okay man. I didn't mean to come off as a dick. I was just curious. I think it's the same guy too.

i don't think that is a clear call at all and would put maia up agianst anyone on pure bjj skills
