Economy Maher: Should People Who Didn't Attend College Subsidize Those Who Did?

College is overrated. I’m sick of people acting like college is some sort of right or necessary for success. The most successful people I know didn’t go to college. They did however work their asses off building their own businesses.

Success is more about effort and wise life choices, then simply getting a college degree. Sure a degree opens more doors, but just getting a degree doesn’t ensure success.

You CHOSE music. You just had to pick an elective in the “arts”.

Having said that. Classes should not cost the same at an institution.
Music or Art.....yeah, both are shitty and are the same to me. Worthless courses I wanted nothing to do with, and would offer me absolutely nothing in the future.

If it was just something in "liberal arts" yeah, that would have been fine with me as I did take 6 psych courses, took history courses as well. But "the arts" ewwwww. I didn't need that shit. In fact, I'd say you should only have to take course directly related to the area you're studying. This whole "well-rounded education" shit is dumb.

They definitely aren't paying the professors the same, so courses definitely shouldn't cost the same.

Same as high school was in the 50s and before I'd imagine.

hello and well met, Captain Davis,

*salutes*

well, a good bit of America seems to agree with you. the US has now slipped to 13th in the world in per capita population with degrees.

it wasn't so long ago that the US was #1.

so, i guess, hopefully the trend continues?

hi Limbo, good to see you,

yes, yes.

down with college.

this thread is (i can't find another way to describe it) a really funny encapsulation of how weird people can be about how dumb they are.

from the responses, you'd figure that every college major in America is pursuing degrees in Interpretive Dance and Women's studies - and that's the argument they make against "free college".

*sigh*

it's so lazy, but i guess that's what happens on the interwebs. i can imagine those folks hitting "Post Reply", secure in the conviction that they've made a devastating point.

here are the current top five majors in America;

1 - Nursing
2 - Information Systems Management
3 - Civil Engineering
4 - Computer Science
5 - Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

If all the fast food workers who don't want to go to school live in an enclave with other fast food workers where they don't have access to roads that people who went to college built or hospitals that employ people who went to college then ok, but for some reason i don't think they really want that.

heya Sohei,

are you describing Alabama?

*high five*

you're right, of course. they don't really want to live in a third world shithole....so they gorge themselves on tax dollars from liberal, northeastern states.

- IGIT

We really need to stop looking down on the educated. They are useful, productive folks just trying to make a living. And somebody's gotta do our taxes and colonoscopy's and shit.

But did those people benefit from college educated people?

Did they need the services of engineers, doctors, lawyers, architects, teachers?

Higher education in a society benefits society as a whole.

hullo The ScorpioN,

maybe that's the right route to take - though i think a better one would be just to open up immigration and naturalization to all the foreign grad students.

roughly 7 out of 10 graduate students in the STEM fields are from places like India, China, Korea and Turkey.

make it way easier for them to become Americans. they're already demonstrating the desire and the aptitude to advance in these technical fields and they're paying US institutions to teach them.

i'd like to keep their brainpower here, since we've already got their tuition dollars.

Brain draining the world?
That's interesting, I'm also somewhat of a staunch America-first nationalist myself. But I'd prefer to give Americans an opportunity to pay for a useful education first (without the usury), and if there's a shortage of specialists then take some foreign brain power with easy naturalization included.

But dude.... my successful friends made money on building housing without government building codes, home inspection businesses without codes to follow and cutting grass.

Obviously college is not worth investing in.

Honestly, i have 2 soon to be seniors at the house and I get the idea behind it - I just don't like the idea of it.

hello PainIsLife,

that's a great, honest response.

a close friend of mine (he's one of those, "I don't like Trump, but alot of what he says makes sense - and i'm not a Republican, but i hate liberals" sort of fellows) is kind of in the same boat.

he makes around 100k, but he and his wife have also produced four kids.

so he kinda likes this whole "free college" thing. its caught his attention.

i think he just wishes that President Trump had come up with the idea.

hello The Scorpion,

well, we can educate those folks and then send'm out into the big, wide world to compete against us...or we can get'm on our team.

i mean, the way i see it, they can clearly pay the costs (foreign students are not eligible for Federal financial aid) so they incur no debt on the taxpayers...and they're driven as hell...and they're sharp as tacks, academically.

they are, generally speaking, not white people, but this is one of the rare countries (and the only superpower) where that shouldn't be a problem - because this is America.

yeah, i'd like to steal those players and get them on our bench, for sure.

hmmm.

i don't know how to address you in a way that doesn't cause you to be upset - though in general i think courtesy is the best manner to begin.

i'll try a different tact - one that's hopefully more to your liking.

let us begin again.

Hello you dumb cunt,

you and Mr. Maher, both dumb motherfuckers, need to pull your heads out of your assholes and think before you speak.

yes, the taxpayers will pay for it. as per Senator Warren, it will be upper middle class families that will be the taxpayers who pony up the bill (you know, the ones that have 50 million plus in net worth).

do you understand, you dumb chunk of shit? do i have to draw you a picture, you goddamn retard???

sincerely,

Nurses are the biggest SJW cucks of all. They care for everyone!

SMDH. America is certainly doomed.

Half my was class was Asian. Most cognitively apt people I've met. I concur with you, for the achievers US citizenship should be a given.
A no interest loan to continue useful education also wouldn't hurt.

Dude that is the system we have

Do you think we've import doctors and scientists as some part of an SJW conspiracy the last 100 years?

We bring them in for the same reason communist countries tried to stop these people from leaving.

We aren't all created equal. Not everyone is capable of being a doctor or an engineer

Lord knows the last thing we need is a better educated society

Should outlaw college IMO and bring back slavery and indentured servitude. Sounds like a winning plan for any country in 2019.

I don't think today's teens and now 20-somethings realize or realized they would be competing against TENS OF MILLIONS of people studying the basics for hours a day throughout their educational years. On average, we're not even competitive.

hi PHATV!!!

i have an idea; what we should do, is radically reduce the amount that states appropriate for financial aid in their budgets.

this way, students will get less and less financial aid - and will therefore make college less attractive.

*blinks*

oh wait.

we've done that. lol. current state funding for their college institutions is seven billion dollars lower than it was in 2008. i wonder...do you think there is any linkage with between this slashing of funding and the boom in student debt?

in 2004, student debt was around 340 billion dollars. by 2017? 1.4 trillion dollars!

i wonder....it sure sounds like today's teens and 20 somethings were pretty much let down by the 40 and 50 somethings who control the levers of power.

but go on, keep blaming the kids. its more convenient, for sure.
