You are equivocating "culture," "nationality" and "ethnicity." Nationality is very simple; culture is very complex; ethnicity is a matter of DNA, so both simple in one sense and complex in others.

"American" is a nationality. It is also a culture, although it is an extremely hybridized culture made up of many subcultures. "American" is not an ethnicity at all (except potentially for native peoples).
