Truth be told America only exists in its current state because Scot- Irish people emigrated to America and upon decided to join forces with George Washington and fight the British. If they had not bothered to emigrate to America the history of the United States would be very different. The British even blamed the emigrant Irish as the reason they had lost the continental war.

There's a saying that Irish people have that it was the Irish that built America - that's where he's getting it from. And the suggestion is not that they ruled it or paid for it to built or the like, but rather that millions of Irish immigrants and their descendants worked in construction and other manual jobs which meant they physically built a lot of buildings. Which of course is true. But it somewhat overlooks the contribution of people like the Chinese and other immigrant groups.

There is some good reason for that.

At least 30 million American's have some Irish ancestry. To put that in perspective, Ireland's current population is about 4.5 million.

So there are about 7 times as many Americans of partially Irish descent than there are people living in Ireland right now.

There's not any guilt about it. It's just having an accurate view of history. Everybody came from somewhere. Usually the simple-minded Cretans who list "white American" as their only ethnicity are the same one's who want "brown Americans" to "go back where they came from."

I say its lot higher then 30 million. They are only the people who see themselves as Irish and then you have people who have Irish ancestry but have lost all track of that over time. I would not be be surprised if its closer to 80-100 million if we include the Scot-Irish peoples in that stat.
