RAW ran a montage this week of past Survivor Series'...

In one clip, Mysterio pins Big Show...it got me thinking...did giving smaller guys too much clout over the big guys turn a lot of people away from PW, especially WWE?

I remember the Cruiserweight Divisions being a hit in ECW and WCW...

I also remember WWE being a ton more popular (it's current popularity is ALWAYS up for debate) when it was big guys vs. big guys/regular-sized dudes...

It seems as though there's plenty of smaller dudes on the roster to keep 'em within their own realm...I don't know about you, but seeing Kalisto face dudes like Barrett and Sheamus is always a bit awkward.

Ever since WWE put the belts on Benoit and Eddie the new age wrestling fan have been bred to believe small guys > big guys. Reality is Smaller guys have always been use to enhance a card not headline it. They were the guys to put on a show before the main event talent go started aka Mid Carders.

Revisionist history loves to trash guys like Goldberg, Nash, Hogan, etc today talking about how they can't wrestle as good as Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit but reason why is because they didn't need to and it didn't matter. They were the mega stars who drew the money to show. Nash couldn't do German suplexs and backflips but no one cared because people loved watching him beat the shit out of people smaller than him

Goldberg couldn't wrestle a 4.5 star classic Meltzer approved match but no one cared because they paid their money to see Goldberg destroy people in the ring which is why he popularity rivaled Stone Cold Steve Austin in the late 90s.

Hulk Hogan was the biggest draw in two decades for two different companies, can anyone remember a 5 star match he had in his prime? You think millions of people cared about that when they bought their red and yellow or NWO shirts? Big guys have the charisma to sell tickets and make people want to see them kick ass. Smaller Guys while better in the ring have never been money makers.

HBK in his prime was one of the best in ring guys in history and he was a horrible draw on the top of the card. Bret Hart was a big regional draw in his home country but bad everywhere else. Benoit never drew a dime but some would call him the best in ring wrestler of all time.

Ever since Benoit murdered his family, guys in WWE and wrestling in general have gotten smaller and smaller. Wrestling's popularity has gotten smaller and smaller as well. It's fun to discredit bigger guys these days because they can't wrestle as good as the 5'8 180 pound indy guy can but look at your Top mainstream guys today John Cena, Brock Lesnar, etc Big guys still have a place and still bring in the money. The only smaller guy to break through with the mainstream was CM Punk and his run was relatively short.

Small guys can make a show better but big guys bring in the $$$

No doubt WWE is moving away from unathletic body builders and filling up with more highly skilled/athletic individuals. Seth Rollins is the perfect examples of this. In my opinion people are tired of seeing big oaf's that can barely walk.

People like Lesnar are big but still highly athletic and capable of doing awesome stuff.. Where as people like Braun strowman are huge but can't perform anything more radical than a bear hug. Its hard to find people over 6'6 that aren't borderline deformed. I think the undertaker is the only one that ever didn't look like he was stuck in the mud.

I'm sure WWE will always keep giants around for gimmicky fun but I doubt there will be too many more guys coming in that are larger than the likes of Big E/Sheamus/Cena.

This is defiantly for the best. People like khali/strowman/batista are terrible for business.

6'1-6'3, 200-250lbs seems to be the ideal size for pro wrestling. Anything less than that and you are going to look scrawny.. Anything more than that (besides exceptions like lesnar/rock/big E) and you are going to start seeing a huge decline in ability.

Because Hogan appealed to children, all of whom remembered their love for him as they grew up and cheered for the nostalgia after he came out.

This. Even though I don't really follow it anymore, getting to go to Wrestlemania 19 is still one of the highlights of my life. I finally got to live my childhood dream of watching The Hulkster wrestle live. Not to mention getting to see Rock vs Austin, HBK vs Jericho, Lesnar vs Angle. Man what an amazing card, the best of multiple generations of wrestling all on one night.

Quite the opposite actually. I'm sure fans love underdog stories where the smaller guy beats the bigger guy, and matches when a smaller wrestler has to overcome that size disadvantage can be pretty entertaining (if done correctly).

Daniel Bryan is less than 6 feet tall, and he has probably been the most over wrestler on the roster for the last couple of years.

When Rey was still big, the fans would pop for him just as much as they did for Cena and Batista.

I doubt the smaller guys had anything to do with turning fans away.

Yes. I can't stand to watch WWE nowdays, which is sad because I was a massive fan back during the Attitude Era and up until about 2004-ish.

btw, Goldberg was my favorite. I didn't watch him because I wanted to see some technical match. I watched him because I wanted to watch him absolutely MASSACRE people in the ring.

WWE has tried to remake "the dominate guy" a lot of times, but have failed each and every time, outside of maybe 2002 Lesnar. No one captured my interest like WCW "Streak" Goldberg and 2002 Brock Lesnar.


My all-time favorite wrestlers were WCW Goldberg, 2002 Brock Lesnar, and Evolution Batista. Ironically enough, WWE tried to ruin all of them. THey tried to bury Goldberg, turned Lesnar into the biggest pussy ever (2003) and same for post-Evolution Batista. They made him into the biggest fucking homo I have ever seen. But those three purely in the time period I listed were freaking awesome.

Luke Harper is a great big man who works well IMO. He can show great power and sometimes power is needed in a match.

That said Kalisto brought down the house on SmackDown, what he can do is highly entertaining.

I'm fine with sizes, it's personalities I care about. If a guy is bland as fuck he better look like he can beat someone's ass. So if a guy is 5'8" and tries act like a shooter with a million moves but the personality of a brain damaged baboon, I don't care. If a guy is 6'8" and has only 5 moves and no personality I'll still go "look at the guy, that's a big motherfucker".

Maybe Nash is a legit tough guy, I don't know, I was just fucking around. But this notion that if you're not a big guy you have no business being in there with the other big guys is obviously wrong. I'm not saying Daniel Bryan could hang in a fight with Brock Lesnar but I think they could have some great matches.

I'm fine with that, big man vs little man has been perfected by Bret, HBK and Mysterio, they bump around for the big guys, get that crowd sympathy and wait for the big man to slip on a banana peel and capitalize on it.

I'd rather watch HBK vs Batista over CM Punk making a former UFC HW champ scream for his life because he wanted to look like a legit tough guy when he couldn't even knock down a neckbeard in glasses when he was champ.
