Futbol Lionel Messi Appreciation Thread

Name the best 3 players for Argentina right now not named Messi, and describe their current status and standings at their clubs

IMO:
Dybala-Played like 15 combined minutes
Alvarez- Bench for City/On Loan at RP
Mac Allister- Plays for Brighton
You said Argentina team was full of past prime defenders and midfielders

2 of the 3 biggest standout players in Argentina defense were Lisandro Martinez who is like 23 or 24, in fantastic form and plays for Manchester United. Molina who is 25 and plays for Atletico Madrid

At midfield everything changed for Argentina when Scaloni put Enzo Fernandez, you know, the YOUNG player of the tournament, who in about 6 months will be playing at a Liverpool, City, Madrid, Barcelona type club and put McAllister a 23 year old player who has been amazing for Brighton. De Paul is 28, why would he be past his prime?

Also Julian Alvarez is only on the bench for City because literally the best 9 in the world plays there. Alvarez starts for 90% of the best teams in the world, the kid is amazing

So yeah your comment about past prime defenders and midfielders was silly and straight up false. Argentina isn't a team full of names like France but they are very solid, Scaloni did an amazing putting this team together. You arguably the best penalty stopped in the world in Martinez who was crucial in Argentina winning game after game, you had Enzo and McAllister playing great and Alvarez, Di Maria coming in clutch. No one wins alone, this team was great and Messi had an amazing tournament. No need to create false narratives to enhance something that doesn't need it-Messi's greatness.

Otamendi, Tagli, Acuna, Pazella, on and on
Messi just won a WC with team full of chokers, young talent and past-their-prime defenders and midfielders.
Either of Maradona's teams he won a WC with would 3-nil this Argentina if Messi or Diego stayed out of it.
I know you Ron Ron dorks love to cherry pick, but please shut the fuck up if you're not going to address a full point.

As well, Otamendi, Tagli, Acuna, Pezella, Di Maria, on and on played tons of minutes.

Lisandro didn't even play in the final lmao

LOL so the chokers part do you also include Messi? Because he used to be the posterboy for choking in Argentina and was called a Pecho Frio for years in Argentina. You're the one cherry picking here pretending that this Argentina side won with "past prime" midfielders and defenders when it's not true, especially the midfield lmao

Acuna didn't start all games, neither did Tagliafico or Pazella. Otamendi is old but was in amazing form coming into this WC in Benfica could be argued as the 2nd best central defender of the tournament behind Gvardiol so what are you on about. Enzo, Otamendi, Dibu Martinez will all be in the team of the tournament, Alvarez might even be there too. Stop pretending Messi plays for Zimbabwe and carried a bunch of cans. So retarded.

I didnt read a word of this

He has just won the World Cup. He is undisputedly the GOAT of football. He deserves his own thread.

Let’s appreciate Lionel Messi!!
Love Lionel Messi... but the Agentine squad, I thought, showed little class against the Dutch and sorta continued that all the way through the final. Even the lingering on the penalty spot scuffing the dirt is just scummy - I realize it's done in the sport but I don't ever recall that in a big moment in the knockout phase.

I would say some of the players on the squad were a little immature, like the goalkeeper and that’s unfortunate. But, hopefully that doesn’t take away from their achievements and Messi making history.

Fuck Messi

We Dutch were no better.

Dumfries was riling them up just as well during the game and before the game Van Gaal was, albeit unwittingly, talking shit about Messi and some Argentinians aswell. As Dutchmen we like to act all surprised and on the moral high horse about the Argentinians putting so much weight on this, but it's a different culture over there so after the dust settled I could get behind their mentality. The Dutch started it. Both went over the line

He is like the GSP of Football, Argentina's setback to Saudi Arabia was like when GSP lost to Matt Serra or Usman losing to Caceres I'd say, and Tunisia beating France was similar to Warlley/Colby, but when the 2 of Argentina and France clashed, it was like Usman vs Colby 1, one of the best fights ever in 2019 and in UFC history, and that football match was one of the best matches ever in 2022 and in Football history, Messi's Argentina lost his chance in 2014 against Germany like when Glover lost his chance to Jon in 2014 but Messi's Argentina won it in 2022 against France similar to Glover finally winning his title from Jan in 2021, what a career! what a story! this will go down in history as one of the most storied careers! not just in Football history but in Sports history! GO MESSI!
Edit: how coincidental these things:
1-When Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia, they lost to them on 22/11/2022 and the score was 2-1 to Saudi Arabia
2-The only 2 times France lost their finals were due to penalties to Italy and Argentina, and it happened that they lost it in 2006 and 2022, Messi's first World Cup and his last World Cup
3-Just like how the last time France won their world cup in 1998 which was the year Mbappe was born and also their first world cup ever, also last time Argentina won their world cup which was their second world cup, it happened in 1986, almost on the year Messi was born on but Messi was born in 1987.
That world cup was like the UFC 217 or UFC 261 of Football, Well, while maybe it was bitter for some and sweet to some, only to the ones that saw it sweet, it was Simply the best world cup ever and the best Final ever!

How Coincidental that he won it on Steve Austin's Birthday! it was also the day Jake KO'ed T-Wood, I hated that fight of 2021 but hey, God is good, always, man, replaces terrible with good and brings the good out of the terrible, a beautiful match in 2022 happened!

Maradona is GOAT Argentinian soccerer. There is nothing Messi did or can do to change that.

<TrumpWrong1>

Argentinian here. Many nostalgic old heads still have Maradona as their GOAT, I think partially due to an emotional connection. However, even many OG pundits put Messi and Diego on equal footing now, and of course everyone under 40.

To be honest, it makes no sense to compare eras. It’s like comparing Khabib to Royce Gracie. I’m sure Pele was amazing, but let’s be honest, who the fuck was he playing against in the talent pool of the 1960’s compared to now, when every nation has at least one or two elite players earning millions and dedicating every second to training, and every club and nation scouts 12 year olds all over the world.

Even Egypt and Senegal have Mane and Salah, and they barely make it to the WC/past group stage (Mane was injured but still). RM just paid $60mil for a 16 y/o kid. It’s not really fair to compare. I’m 100% sure Messi would’ve dominated in any era, it’s not like Ramos, Pepe, etc are easy going defenders. Then again, Maradona didn’t have the teammates Messi has had, so the comparison is pointless. I admit that some shit I've seen in Maradona footage is stuff I've never seen anyone else do.

Messi is the undisputed GOAT of the last ~30 years, no one I’ve seen comes close. Cristiano has more total goals, and many titles, but Messi has a higher goal contribution per game average, and he’s not even a striker, which is insane. Also many more titles, both individual and collective. He’s ahead in absolutely everything except total goals, Champions League wins, and jumping/header ability. Far better playmaker, passer, much deeper understanding of the game, much more versatile, complete football brain and motor of any team, more goals per game, higher combined G/A total, and won everything at the national level, which CR didn’t and won’t.

Ronaldo (OG one) was the best striker I’ve ever seen, but shorter peak, and nowhere near the numbers, playmaking or titles. Ronaldinho had the genius and pure skill, but nowhere near the dedication or goalscoring ability. Imagine playing in the same team as Henry, Neymar, Ronaldinho, Iniesta, Xavi, and Ibrahimovic and still clearly being the best guy on the pitch every time. The idea that there can even be a debate about this generation’s GOAT is an absurdity. He’s in Mt. Rushmore with Diego, Pele, and maybe Cruyff or Di Stefano; no one else can join that conversation.

one thing is certain nobody else can claim they won a world cup despite lautaro martínez. That is a HUGE achievment.

Also Maradona did PEDs while Messi is clean!

Messi will probably go down as the goat but imo peak for peak its Maradona but he had a much shorter peak as the flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long.

It's a shame really that they kicked Maradona out of USA 94 for some cold medicine violation, I think they would have won that world cup with him.
