Wow, Royce Gracie is still technically a top 25 in some way.

Following shows monthly (latest month on the left) dynamics in the LW division.
Number below W/L is Opponents Rating (on the scale 1 - 34) at the time when fight happened.

Khabib had a big inactivity period (2 years) and then fought opponent with lower rating (17).
Al Iaquinta is on a 4 fight win streak, but no fight since Apr 2015.
Cerrone was very active in 2013/2014. In January 2015 he had two Wins.
Eddie has just one fight per year.
Pettis has all high level opponents (Rating>29), but 3 Losses in a row.

Observations:

Dos Anjos kind of blows them all away in the p4p ranking.

Nate Diaz is number 2, while he is not in the top 10 in the lightweight Sherdog rankings.

How are these calculated? Why are the scores so different from Sherdog rankings?

LW championship bouts since 2010 (monthly timeline).

UFC lw division has been the best division in MMA for a really long time.

Khabib soon to jump from number 6 to number 1

These rankings are ridiculous! Nate Diaz is no way top 2. Bobby Greenc should be in top 15 not 30 lol. Dariush and MJ should also be higher ranked.

If you want to see what those scores mean you can start with this thread
Distinction between All Time Ranking and Current Ranking
In that thread I explained the differences between two main scores that are calculated for each fighter - All Time Total and Current Score.

And then you can go to How Current Score is calculated - formula

Nate Diaz just beat ex #2 P4P fighter that was supposed to fight for LW belt and become first two UFC division champion.

Bobby Green was on a big win streak before he lost to Barboza. That was in 2014. He didn't fight since then. This is Current Ranking and if you don't fight for 1.5 years you will drop in rankings.

My rating is Current Ranking based on the recent achievements.
Khabib was inactive for 2 years and then fought subpar opponent. You might say it is not his fault, but still didn't show much in the last 2 years.
Now he needs to beat somebody with the high rating in order to get to #2 spot.

While Khabib was inactive, Donald fought 7 times, Tony had 6 wins.
You have to reward people that are actually fighting.
You cannot sit on your past wins and expect to keep your old high rankings.

Okay I didn't consider the long layoff of Bobby Green. But defeating a featherweight in the welterweight division, doesn't make you the number 2 lightweight, even if Conor is a top p4p. Diaz is 2-3 in his last 5 fights riding a 1 fight winning streak in LW, with 1 victory in 2 years. And Conor's LW run is hypothetical, he didn't become a 2 division champ, he didn't even fight for the title, nor has he had a win or even a fight in the UFC LW division, all the fights he had outside of UFC FW div. he lost.

Conor was CWFC LW champion before he came to UFC.
He is a very big FW and he said multiple times that he will switch to LW.
After he KO'd one of the All Time greats, he was supposed to fight RDA for LW title.

Diaz is a LW. He is tall, but no muscles. There is no big difference in strength between two of them.

You can say that Nate was lucky to get that Conor fight and win. But sometimes you need some luck.

Yes and Hector Lombard was bellator mw champion, and then lost to Tim Boetsh. Those divisions doesn't mean anything next to the UFCs, again Conor has zero victories outside of the UFC FW div.

Conor says a lot but fact is he didn't fight for the LW title, and has no fights in LW so he is unranked in that division.

MMA is not about strength, and I would never call Nate lucky to win that fight

I love Conor and Nate Diaz, all I'm saying is these rankings does not make sense.

Many people are debating P4P ranking for Conor, Nate and Aldo.

Here is how did we get to this point.

1. Before Aldo - McGregor (Nov 2015)
Aldo was a long time FW champion and one of the All Time greats.
He did slow down recently. In the last 4 years he had just 4 fights.
No longer flashy and superior as before (3 decisions from 4 fights), but still wining. On a huge win streak.
That makes him #2 P4P.

Conor was on a huge win streak as well - 15 fights undefeated.
Yes, not all high level opponents, but he just defeated Chad Mendes and has a win over Max Holloway.
Lots of hype and hate. He is #2 FW (this is now the hottest division in UFC).

Nate was defeated by RDA and was without fight for almost a year.
He is in bad relation with UFC, wants more money. Also low in the rankings.

2. After December fights (on 1/1/2016)
Conor KO'd Aldo. One of the fastest KO's. Clear Win.
Nate defeated solid opponent (Michael Johnson) in a very exciting fight.

This is P4P situation on 1/1/2016:
p4p_201601_Nate77.jpg

Conor is on a huge win streak, and on the top of the hottest UFC division.
Since some long term champions lost and DJ is in a weakest division, Conor goes to #2 P4P.

Relative inactivity (1 fight per year) was fine for Aldo while he was winning.
After this loss this inactivity is hurting him in the rankings. And he lost all his win streak points.

I included Werdum and Miocic to show how quickly things change on the Current Rankings.

3. After McGregor - Diaz

Conor wanted to be two division UFC champion and Dana obliged.
Unfortunately, RDA was injured and Conor selects Nate as his replacement.
And he wants that to be at 170, not 160 as Nate originally suggested.
Those were all Conors decisions and he has nobody to blame for what happened next.
And what happen was tapout in the second round.

Diaz had a huge jump in his Current Score points, and Conor dropped in the rankings.
They are now #12 and #14.

Aldo dropped further down because now he is more than 2 years away from his last win.
That is problem with not being very active.

This is our current P4P ranking

How would you rank those 3 fighters?

Again, that is all hypothetical, Conor never fought in the UFC LW Div. Chris Weidman talked about fighting Jon Jones, so if OSP fought Weidman at the time he was champion (OSP ranked around top 8 at the time I believe) and defeated Chris at HW would that make him the number 2 LHW?

I don't wanna argue p4p because that's all fantasy, and Conor losing at WW shouldn't affect his p4p status since there is a big size difference and there goes against what p4p is.

How is Nate's win over Conor hypothetical?
That really happened!
Winning and losing fights have consequences. In ranking terms, winning causes you to go up. Losing moves you down.
