1) Of course biceps are an important muscle. Let's see you chin, row or go through a day without using them.
2) In strongman, and in real life, you often have to lift with bent arms, unlike when you're lifting a barbell. So you need strong biceps, in addition to any number of other muscles. Even with pulls off the ground with a barbell, you can reduce the risk of a bicep injury, by *gasp* training the biceps.
3) So do your upper back work, like you already should be doing for any number of other reasons. Do your chins and rows. And then do more chins for good measure.
4) Curls can be an entirely reasonable choice for an assistance exercise, although they aren't an essential exercise.
5) For a beginner, the stimulus and fatigue of the main lifts is plenty, so there typically isn't a need or benefit for any assistance work, including curls.
6) Don't be an anti-isolation exercise ideologue. It's not the type of exercise that's the problem, it's their misuse. Avoiding isolation exercises entirely doesn't make you more "hardcore" or mean you're training smarter than someone who uses them judiciously.
I loves you. Thank you for explaining it so much better than I ever could.
