My MT gym has a weight room, so I was wondering if there are any drawbacks to lifting for about 30 mins before class starts. Should I drink a protein shake after lifting or after mt? Im kinda hesitant about drinking a shake right before intense cardio. Any advice would be appreciated.

Any serious weight training will tire you out and probably hinder your MT training, i know some guys like to strength train before BJJ to tire their muscles out to concentrate on form but most striking based disciplines work best if you are fresh and have some snap behind your punches, now alot of guys end up tired and sluggish at the end of striking but i wouldn't want to start every class already tired.

Ok thanks for the help. How would strength training after mt be? The reason I ask is because I dont have enough time to do both on different days.

One or the other is going to suffer, and since it sounds like you're pretty serious about the Thai boxing, I'd go with that plan. Keep the volume low.

I almost didn't recognize you with the avatar change...

If its a proper thai gym you should be nearly fucked half way through your warm up young man.

I'd say if you really want to go down that route do as suggested and go for very low volume. Take some BCAA's, low amounts of whey and malto and sip during your training (enough to carry over through the thai as well). If you try and take anything like a protein shake before thai you'll most likely be bringing it up or getting a stitch.
Have a whey and maltodextrin drink ready for when your finished though

I lift before I box sometimes, but only if I'm feeling really good. I do it as a challenge to myself. Def can't do it every day.

I lift before I go to my mma class. It kinda sucks, especially if it's a heavy lower body day but I don't have any choice.

I used to lift after BJJ. I wouldn't do that again. Working on technique is one thing, but you don't have to be tired to do it, and there are many situations where I'd like to know if I could have gotten out with an explosive bridge, and many wrestling and judo takedowns are much less effective in my experience if you come in twice as tanked as the other guy.

ViperXL? Are you the guy who wanted to fight with no training, and had a huge thing in the conditioning forum about that?

I'd give it a go once or twice. After a couple of sets of heavy deadlifts or squats I've gone onto the bags and noticed a large improvement in power; kicks in particular seemed to benefit the most. I think it's a temporary potentiation of the CNS, or in plain English, lifting heavy will give you super power for a short time, until you hit your glycogen barrier, then it falls apart.

Wouldn't make a habit of it, though, as Mr. Coe points out, your warm-up ought to be uncomfortable.

Try it and see.

I lift before Muay Thai and BJJ. Keep Lifting time short (20mins or so) and you should be fine.
