I was at a friend's place, and using the bathroom, the nosey fuck that I am I see all sorts of bottles of meds.

Doing a little web browsing and this stuff is rather eye opening.

I'm not the type that really enjoys going to the doctor, and only do so if I feel something real bad is going on. And I have never been to a psychiatrist.

Quick searches are saying stuff like:

70% of people are on at least one prescription drug. Over 50% 2+. 20% on 5+!!!!
13% of adults are on anti-depressants!
1 in 4 women over 40 years old are on anti-depressants.
One third of foster children are on psychotics drugs.
200,000 people a year dying from taking drugs as prescribed.
Prescription pain killers killing more people than coke and heroin combined.

I am not really sure if the deaths are doctor error or what.

But I am caught off guard by these numbers. I would think that if I was in a grocery store with a hundred people, my guess would be on average maybe 1 would be on anti depressants, not 10. I kind of feel like showing up to work and guess who are the ones on meds.

And this is in the backdrop of being surprised by finding out in quick succession that two friends I have see therapists.

What says Sherdog about this? Stress of modern life?, the long arms of the pharmaceutical industry? Anybody brave??? enough to admit they are / were on anti depressants? Who is on multiple prescriptions?

I'm not on anything. I do have a general belief that doctors have been over prescribing. Is it because people ask for the drugs? The doctors are lazy (or perhaps overbooked) & writing scripts to get people out of their office? Perhaps pressured by big pharma to push product. Probably some of all of the above.

We are an over drugged society though, that much I do believe.

I take a certain drug at a dosage that often makes other doctors give the wow look.

I'm on zero thank God. Our medical system is no longer about getting people to change their life habits. Just pop these pills and you're good. It's too easy.

I understand sometimes you need to take something temporarily and some people need them to stay alive. I've needed drugs for pain and for sickness. But we'd be better off if we took care of ourselves better and if we weren't permanently on pills.

I'm not on anything. I don't even have something like Advil or Tylenol in my house because I don't ever use it. The only time I'll have any kind of medication is when I have a bad cold/sinus infection. Then I'll have liquid day/nyquil.

I think people overuse most things, including stuff like Tylenol anyway.

Not only do American' consume 80% of the world's pain killers but specifically, a drug like hydrocodone/vicodin, Americans take 99% of the world's supply.

The United States makes up only 4.6 percent of the world's population, but consumes 80 percent of its opioids -- and 99 percent of the world's hydrocodone, the opiate that is in Vicodin.

Big business convincing everybody that they are sick.
Makes me sick...I wonder...is there a pill for what I suffer from?

Seen a couple documentaries lately that say this is the #1 reason for the heroin epidemic in recent years. People get hooked on the opioids, can't get them anymore & move onto heroin to get their fix. Craziness.

That's the game, to hold society back from using their minds, they don't want people who can think ...so they offer up a surplus of drugs, they promote and advertise Alcohol 24/7 on Tv, Radio, Movies, the internet ...every where you look you are constantly being bombarded with ads to take drugs and use alcohol.

It's the best way to keep a society from coming together and using their minds for a greater cause.

Every aspect of the Western World has been corrupted by greed and the pursuit for that dolla dolla bill Yo!

We look no further then the disgusting case of Dr. Farid Fata - the Dr. who would dignosis patients with cancer who did not have cancer all to milk the patient of their money along with their health care provider.

This is very accurate. Everyone I've arrested for heroin had started on prescription opiates, then moved to heroin cause it was cheaper.

Wow those stats are insane.

Looking at friend's though it doesn't shock me. I know some people that think they might have a extremely mild headache coming on so they pop a couple Tylenol. I always say how about try drinking a glass of water, walk around for a minute and grab a handful of something healthy to quickly snack on. Always works for me.

Yes Americans in general are over prescribed and they are partly to blame along with the pharmaceutical industry and American Association of Medicine. People are generally under educated about the side effects of drugs and other possible therapies are swept away in favor of a "quick fix". It has become part of our society i.e. instant gratification, lack of patience and advertisement/propaganda are all part of this deep sociological problem.

Health? Pills, pills, pills.
Morals/ethics? Laws, laws, laws.
Spirituality? Religion, religion, religion.
Wealth? Exploit, compete, obsolete.
Politics? Power, control, govern, bureaucracy, repeat.
Military? might is right, as victory writes history
Talking & thinking? Surveil, surveil, surveil.

Individualism? digital identity's and material ornamentation.
Culture? consumerism
Community? the people I get stuff from.

Humanity is suffocating under its own weight and eating itself alive.

It's crazy how many people I know who are on anti-depressants (never taken them myself). Once they're on them, they never seem to come off them either.
Not sure if it's still the case, but Australia used to have the second highest prescription rate after Iceland (although that study didn't include the USA). Just under 1 in 10 I believe, and that rate doubled from 2000-2011. I can't imagine what could have caused that besides an increased rate of prescription.
Same goes for the explosion of prescribing amphetamines for kids with behavioural issues in the '80s. The number of kids with troubled behaviour from abusive backgrounds that were popping dexies (or in some cases their parents would take them, until schools were put in charge of medicating these kids), was ridiculous. These kids had problems, no doubt, but I can't imagine dexies were any sort of solution.
Of course it doesn't surprise me that people would be more willing to pop a pill than pursue any other form of treatment for depression or mental illness.
Easier, cheaper and (somewhat surprisingly) less stigmatised.

Why is marijuana not legal? Why is marijuana not legal?
It's a natural plant that grows in the dirt.
Do you know what's not natural?
80 year old dudes with hard-ons. That's not natural.
But we got pills for that.
We're dedicating all our medical resources to keeping the old guys erect,
but we're putting people in jail for something that grows in the dirt?

You know we have more prescription drugs now.
Every commercial that comes on TV is a prescription drug ad.
I can't watch TV for four minutes without thinking I have five serious diseases.
Like: "Do you ever wake up tired in the morning?"
Oh my god I have this, write this down. Whatever it is, I have it.
Half the time I don't even know what the commercial is:
people running in fields or flying kites or swimming in the ocean.
I'm like that is the greatest disease ever. How do you get that?
That disease comes with a hot chick and a puppy.

All of my family members have diabetes once they reach mid 40's. I'm pretty sure I will have it too despite being in decent shape and eating right. No avoiding taking pills then.

But at least for now, nothing.

No chance, cowboy.

I don't go to doctors unless it's something truly serious, and I certainly won't go on any type of long term medication unless it's life or death. The worst thing I take now is something for a headache if I have a bad hangover.

I'm not on anything and I hope I never will
Be.

I had a friend come back from the Iraq war and get prescribed hundreds of pills by several different doctors from the various va places he went. He died of a seizure related to the drugs.

I'm prescribed anti-depressants (Selexa) but I haven't taken any because of bad side effects from a previous anti-depressant I used (Paxil). I also have been prescribed Xanax and I've only had good experiences with it although I only take it when I'm having a panic attack. I do agree with a previous poster on here that says that docs just want to give u pills. I was going through a particularly bad time in my life and I was in and out of the doc's office in less than 5 minutes. It's all about the $$$
