Lets talk fishing

Had a 45 or 50lb King Salmon ripped out of my net this morning, by a 2000+lb male Stellar Sea Lion. It actually stayed on the line, and I fight it for 15 minutes while chasing it with the boat. He had it by the tail and actually lost it twice. Finally, he readjusted and was able to bite off the body, so I actually reeled in the giant head. Caught 3 more Kings all 20-25lbs, but losing that big one, that way stung.
I hate sea lions, I’ve fed them a couple yellowtail before. I wish I could take a rifle fishing with me.

Jesus, this thread makes me so damn jealous.

10 years ago I moved from the Ozarks in Missouri where fishing was a religion. I grew up fishing for Crappie and Walleye, and Rainbow trout in the spring.

Then a good opportunity came along at a great job.......in far west Texas. The desert of west Texas. Now I'm 3 hours away from any sort of fishing (except the Rio Grande, so no thanks), and I can honestly say I miss fishing more than anything from back home.

Luckily I have a vacation planned this fall in Montana, and I'll spend 2 weeks kayaking/fishing the Flathead River, and lakes of Glacier National Park. Even if I dont catch anything, I cant fucking wait to have a rod and reel back in my hand.

Yeah It's one thing when a Calfornia Sea Lion is harassing you, but Stellar Sea Lion are just so massive, you have no chance. The Californias haven't made it up to SE AK yet, but It won't surprise me if they continue to migrate North. In Puget Sound we used to only get Californias, in the summers, but in the past 20 years as its gotten warmer, they are now permanent residents.

Their numbers here are large, and they’re plenty big enough to be a big problem. About 4 years ago we had a charter group fishing bluefin close enough to an island where the big ones could reach us. I hooked one and was in the process of getting him to the boat when one of the those fur bags grabbed the tuna by the tail. That fish made it to the boat luckily.
Another guy was using a reel that was too small for the task at hand, he had a fish that didn’t stop till there was just a few wraps of line on the spool. He didn’t have enough power to bring the fish closer, that tuna was about 900’ from the boat. We saw the cavalry coming, it was like an 80lb tuna was put in a ninja blender. Water started to foam up blood, birds diving in for what they could get, they tore that fish apart like a pack of hairy piranhas. I hope to never see a stellar, we have enough of these smaller versions here.

im in Ontario. Had one really good day on fathers day, my dad pulled out a 5lb Largie. Since then its been slow, but i managed to pull out a 4lb Large, and 3.5 smallie. Pretty good for our area.

Pro fishing circuit big bags (best 5) are in the 26-27lb range, so getting anything over 6lbs is super rare. I dream of the stuff i see on youtube from Texas and Mexico.

Some friends of ours bought a boat. Its a small three person aluminum fishing boat but its pretty cool. We took it out last week and caught a bunch of striped bass. Wish I had some pics but we didn't catch anything till the third day camping and by then my phone was dead. They are pretty good eating though.

Stripers fry up good, great for fish tacos. You fishing the Colorado River or Lake Mead?

Folks tell me it’s rattlesnake city there, really got to watch where you walk.
Funny Ive never heard that. I've never seen one there and we go probably 15 to 20 times a year. When you camp you hear lots of coyotes and see big horn sheep though. Ive heard that about Great Basin further north but I've never seen one there either. I don't doubt it though.

Some old timers here were staying out there for a while, they said they had to watch there step while camping out there, especially at night. Just what I heard. Yeah coyotes are numerous

Caught a 235lb Halibut today. I usually try to let the big ones go, but this one swallowed the hooks bad, and it was bleeding out, so had to harvest it. It will feed a lot of people.

I actualy went fishing on the weekend caught a couple of yellow fin whiting a flathead, chinamen rock cod and countless puffer fish. All with a childrens rod and reel and a handline
