Lets talk fishing

Northern California. And will do. This year has taught me alot tbh. And I'm sure alot of bad habits as well lol.
What got you into it?

I'm jealous of your location. After reading Sowbelly, bass fishing in California sounds like an experience.

Boredom and the wife telling me to figure out a damn hobby.

Well little did she know we would both fall in love with being on the water lol

That's awesome man. My girl and I fish together as well. She loves fishing/photography, so they both work well together.

You catch anything you're proud of yet?

It's always cool when you can find a new common interest for the relationship. My wife doesn't actually fish. She loves the outdoors and swimming. We have a very well know bass tourney lake here call Berryessa. We go there together. She swims I fish. It's awesome.

As for proud I was part of some awesomeness. I was striper fishing on a small pier over here about 5 minutes away from my home. There was a couple of older guys mid 70s or so there that fished daily with me at this pier.
I caught a 12 inch split tail and gave it to one of the other guys to rig up and toss back out. He walks away to do some lure fishing by this pump near the pier. All of a sudden his clicker starts going off and his spool begins running. The other older guy grabs the rod and brings in this 48 inch striper.

No one but me was strong enough to pick the fish up to get it out of the water. So I jump down into the bank and grab it by the bottom lip with both my hands and do a upright row to get it onto the dock.

I shit you not when I say easily 20 more hands could have fit in this fishes mouth when fully open.

48 inches. 42 lbs.

Biggest striper I have personally seen. Including at aquariums in the area.

Not my catch but definitely a sick experience.

How about you? Anything to be excited about?

I'm in northern California. The amount of fishing time I accumulated since this thread was created averaged 45 hrs a week.

Picked up great knowledge as well as bad habits that I now need to spend the spring breaking lol.
I've taken Jan and will take Feb completely off from fishing to focus on work. Come March I'm right back at it full force again.

wow. You are lucky with the fisheries you have. Big big bass. Or as the announcer on bass masters says. “G gi gi gi giant bass”

you have to work so hard for fish here. I go to Florida and it is so easy. I have heard Cali is the same.

find some weeds and under water plants, lily pads, other cover and cast a weedless frog and drag it over the cover. I suggest a teckel sprinker frog. They are like weedless whopper ploppers. Watch videos on YouTube to get an idea. Man I am jealous.

Not a 5lb bass.

hard to say without the whole pic. Over three for sure. But I agree, many anglers, myself included, overestimate the size of fish until they start weighing every fish. Then you have a better idea. I am pretty good with smallmouth, at least in the 1.5 to 3 lb range.

2019 post spawn female caught on a keitech fat swing impact rigged on a Berkeley fusion weedless swimbait hook. Some would consider this a solid fish for a northern indiana largemouth.

I'm willing to admit it may have been grander in my new angler brain than the truth. However I remember weighing it. Was probably another fish. I caught a ton at the same spot this summer.

No safe ice makes for boring winters, so ive been tying hair jigs, making Tokyo rigs, replacing hooks and scuffing hardbaits with steel wool to knock the shine off in hopes they appear more natural. What stuff do you guys do in order to prepare for your next time on the water,?

I'm gonna check out that frog. I have yet to actually catch a bass off of a frog of any sort. I can get a strike but no commitment. Then again I'm not great at walking the dog.

To prepare for my next time I am doing the maintenance cycle for my baitcasters, and rods. Got all my tackle sorted and reorganized. As posted earlier all my MTB for the past 3 months and next 3 months will have to get introduced to my cycle of fun.

Researching a bunch of new water for March up coming.

I didn't put it on a scale but i would be surprised if it was too much over 5lbs. My guess would be 4.75

Hey wizzle, i missed where you were from? More importantly where are you researching lakes to fish?

Fall 2018 Vilas county Wisconsin, caught on a 5 inch slim senko dropshotting isolated rock piles in 15ft of water.
