Let's talk about Conor vs Alvarez

One of the best ever performances in a UFC title fight. Eddie might have helped but that was something else by Conor.

Masterclass from Conor
Eddie fought like an ape
Great stylistic matchup for Conor

So yes, performance wise, it has to be said it is absolutely top tier and Conor never looked better. However, though Eddie was a very good fighter in his own right, he had nothing for Conor's attributes

Mix of a few things. Conor was on his game, hard to say he's looked much better than that in any fight. Eddie seemed to have the dumbest game plan possible. I dont know if you can say Eddie choked but it seemed like he didn't listen to anything his corner said, and there is no way that was their strategy going into it. I think Conor was just too sharp that night, and when he dinged Eddie once it was done from there.

Alvarez has always been one of the more overrated LW’s in MMA. He’s tough and has a few overachieving wins, but he always gets lasered by complete randoms

Overrated? Just look at his wins Gaethje, Pitbull, RDA, Pettis, Kawajiri etc

The only time he got taken out by a "random" was about 35 years old in his One FC debut.

His losses prior to that were all legit guys Connor, Cowboy, Dustin, Chandler and Aoki.

Masterclass of Conor or choke of Alvarez?

Maybe both at the same time?

Bad match up? bad strategy from Eddie? he was intoxicated? stressed? outclassed?

Eddit could have beaten Conor in a rematch?

Discuss

Probably all of that except intoxicated.

I view it as a brilliant performance by Conor and also an atrocious strategy by Alvarez. I feel the leg kicks were a nice idea, but Alvarez stood in the pocket too long. By the time they fought, Conor was a big sized lifghtweight and had improved greatly. Alvarez would have been better served to fight with a pressure and wrestling heavy offense; not just spam takedowns, per se, but mix combos with takedowns without giving Conor a second to breathe -- similar to how Merab fights; easier said than done, but prime Alvarez had the gas tank to do that for at least a couple rounds I reckon. Still though -- Conor fought so smart; a little conservative, but he didn't have to rush things. Alvarez played right into his strength and he just sat back and countered with precise timing and calculated shots while using minimal energy.

Got to give credit to Conor for that one.....that said Alvarez, despite bring champ, hadn't looked overly impressive in his UFC run and has been pretty hit and miss since, too.
Yeah -- he wasn't completely shot in the UFC, but he was definitely past his best days in my opinion. I feel his best form was in Dream and maybe halfway through his Bellator tenure. He was solid in the UFC, but by then his body had largely declined from all of his career activity beforehand. It's impressive to me that he won a belt at that stage of his career against a tough RDA.

Yeah....and even then, RDA apparently had a terrible weight cut and should have been pulled from that fight.

it is common knowledge that Eddie took a dive...re-watch that fight carefully.

Eddie blew it. Conor was on point and at his height. Also, If there was EVER a time when i thought someone MIGHT have taken a dive in a fight it was that night.

Eddie literally said that he messed up by not following the gameplan set out by his team. He went into brawler mode.

Peak Conor was a fiend. All this fuck shit now was a joke. He spent every sec on mma. Master class by Conor and Eddy folded under pressure.

I wish we got Khabib back then. Not a 2 yrs histus Conor and Khabib ducking a rematch. Broootal

At that point, Eddie and the rest of the world knew that Conor was an 8 minute wonder. All he had to do was play defense early, clinch and hang on Conor any chance he got, and then go to work in rds 3-4-5. He blew it. To his credit though, Conor put on the performance of his lifetime. The Aldo KO was a casual-friendly finish but this was Conor's technical masterpiece and last great win (+ it was for the LW title).

Thanks for your genius post between flipping burgers and asking if you want fries with your order.

conor was on point but eddie choked too. fuck dana for giving that leprechaun a title shot, we still hear about it today even though the pussy got stripped.

Patricky Pitbull is nowhere near as good as Patricio, RDA was severely dehydrated, Pettis was on his decline, etc. Context matters.

Never has he gone out and looked like a world beater, he takes tons of damage in fights in hopes of “out toughing” his opponents. I stand by my assessment that he’s a tough over acheiver.

Also Nick Thompson was one of the randoms who knocked him out, Chandler was still wet behind the ears when they fought, and he’s out there in the minor leagues right now getting dusted by randoms. Let’s not make any excuses.
