So, I showed a video of myself benching to this moron I know... And he said that it was terrible because I used leg drive and arched my back.

"glad i dont bench as a "power lifter" id never get chest results. "leg drive" in bench pressing? thats like arching your back in curls. your using other muscles to help your chest because you cant get it up with your chest on its own. which means lower weight and try again and use only your chest muscles. weather that form is right or not i do not recommend using a "leg drive" when benching, as i said, its like using your back to help curls, doesnt help what your really trying to work (chest in bench pressing)"

I realise he's clearly mentally deficient and has no idea what he's talking about so it's probably best not to worry about him, but just generally for when people have this argument - what do I say? I tried telling him that you're not really using your legs to "cheat" so much as using them to put you in a more advantageous position for pressing.

You should stop doing squats and do leg extensions instead, otherwise you're just using other muscles to get the weight up because you can't do it with only your quadriceps.

Or you could just not worry about what idiots think, I don't know.

Slap him across the face and say "You idiot! The bench press isn't an isolation exercise, it's a compound one!"

Then rip off your shirt and bounce your titties like it aint no thang. That'll show 'em.

The way he talking its obvious is in a totaly different training mindset than you. Just agree to disagree and continue getting stonger.

It really is an opinion and is dependent on your goals.

You wouldn't say someone doing a push press is stupid for not doing a strict press, would you?

Ha, that's the exact counter-example I used to his cheat curls.

Okay, now here comes the fun part : the guy is a skinny-fat 125lb 15-year-old know-it-all, who deadlifts 200lb, squats like 150, and benches 90, and gets all of his "really good information" from Bodybuilding.com

But if I had told you this in the original post, I wouldn't have got an answer...

Anyway, I'll just not worry and let him keep getting super awesome chest results.

Well no he's not a moron or mentally deficient, for his probable goals he's making sense...why do you get off on slagging people in your posts?

(no homo) my "chest" (pecs) developed insanely from benching with leg drive. It isn't that the pecs aren't doing just as much work, they are, you're just able to put up bigger numbers overall when you work bench as a compound movement.

In other words, the addition of leg drive doesn't equal subtraction of pec work.

Whatever his mental faculty, he isn't making sense for his probable goals. You don't need strict isolation exercises to induce hypertrophy.

And yes, Dan likes to "slag"(?) people in his posts. He's like 17.

I don't know man, I just would try not to let that stuff bother me. Most people aren't going to listen to people that they know personally, there seems to be some sort of "proximity bias" when it comes to training information.

Instead of arguing with him or insulting him, you should just try to let your results speak for themselves.

Yeah, I agree completely Corrosion and Ascendant. That's exactly what I'm trying to tell him - he's barely gained any weight or strength and is doing some bastardised version of Starting Strength with 3x10s because "jacked guys" on bodybuilding.com told him to.

The sad thing is, his "goal" is actually to increase his performance for MMA - here's another quote:

"i lift so i can condition and get stronger so i can fight. not so i can be some freakishly big guy who can ONLY weightlift. i bet you cant even run 5 miles breeze, or ride a bike 20 miles. your so like, obsessed with weightlifting and think you are always right with things. sure you get chest results using leg drive but your results will me minimal compared to if you dropped some weight and didnt use your legs to help. comparing it to a curl where you jerk your back is a very good comparison because your using a different muscle to help you than what the lift is supposed to be for.

go ahead and use your "leg drive" you can do what you want, but if my goal is to work my chest on chest day im not going to help with my legs. and ive been making amazing results so far, why would i all of a sudden listen to this retarded stuff your saying like "curling your back when maxing is good it happens" when im already doing the complete opposite of what you say and making good results?"

Aaaaanyway, I'm doubtful of his sanity... and I guess this is one of those "you can expose people to information but the responsibility stops there" moments. I'll let him (hopefully) figure this out for himself.

Hehe XT, I have a feeling that would steer the argument in the wrong direction unfortunately...

Very good point.

I also read something in Pavel Tsatsouline's literature that benching like a powerlifter will cause more activation of your pec's because of a phenomenon known as "hyperirradiation." A given muscle contracts more violently when everything else around it is contracting.

I'm only 17... like a 15-year-old, but with good chest results due to the fact that I've hit puberty..

He also said this when I told some guy not to bother trying to get a 6 pack:

"if anyone on these forums know about how to train abs right, it would be me. been training abs for like 3 years. went from nothing -> 4 pack -> 6 pack and still training abs hard.

heres pics of my ab progress over the past few years"

So I made him this (this is his 2 years progress):

The guy is seriously delusional about the kind of "results" he is getting...

His goal is to work his chest? He assumes your goal is to work your chest? Your goal is to get stronger, and from what he said, he likes to think its his goal too. Like lots of people said, you get stronger by using your body as a unit, not as body parts, I can't remember who said it, it was in another thread, but even your mentality and attitude should show this, eg. push day as apposed to 'chest'. Your bench is a push exercise, not a chest exercise.

People like this are very hard to convince, they think the same thing you do about them, that you're ignorant and you have no idea what your doing, like you said all you can do is expose them to the ideas and info, the rest is up to them

Exactly. Not bashing the bodybuilding community, in general it just seems like they just don't understand the concept of total body workouts. EVERYTHING has to be fucking isolated...
