Left vs Right: Which leg do YOU lead with?

BTW, for me it feels more natural to shoot with my left leg forward and attack with reaps/hip throws with my right leg forward. But due to the way I grip fight, I try to do all my techniques on both sides.

1) When standing in Wrestling/Judo/BJJ which leg do you personally place forward as you attempt to shoot/sweep/etc?

2) Are you left or right handed? Edit: As in which hand you write with

3) Do you find any advantage when you are facing someone who uses the opposite stance? What do you normally try against them?

Cheers!

1. Right leg forward
2. Left hand dominant
3. Find it an advantage if they suck at takedowns, not if otherwise lol.
Don't have any go to techniques per se for that situation. I use whatever works -seoi nage, tai otoshi, ouchi gari, singles, uchimata etc. My throws are usually driven by their grips if anything not so much their stance.

1. Right leg forward usually, but sometimes left (I'm orthodox in MT) if I'm not paying attention. The reason this even happened is because my original BJJ coach is a southpaw, and I got used to practicing the same way he demonstrated takedowns.

2. Righty.

3. Yes, my normal stance makes o soto gari, with using my left leg to sweep, soooo much easier, because most guys stand with their left leg in front. I don't have to advance as far to get deep enough to catch people with the sweep.

Even if I accidentally end up with my left leg forward, my sweeps don't really suffer. I just use different throws.

What? I've heard most wrestlers teach the opposite, due to the danger of leaving your lead leg unprotected against leg grabs. (I realize that judoka don't care as much about this.) When I lead with my left leg, my right hand reaches for the opponent.

I am a Judo guy, and I'll typically cross grip as well to start grip fighting. Even in Judo, if you reach to much with your forward leg hand you're vulnerable to seio nage and tai otoshi attempts. You generally want to start with a cross grip to avoid getting arm dragged or a fast single leg.

I fight probably 60/40 right foot/left foot forward. I'm much more concerned with getting inside position and killing my opponents grips than I am with any specific grip setup. Most of the throws I use in BJJ I can do with lefty or right grips with about equal effect, as long as I have the inside line.

I am the same as you or what you are trying to break the habit of.

I have different stances for stand up striking and stand up grappling. I thought it was a major problem, but after seeing the way Diego Brandao was setting up his takedowns against Pineda really made me think I don't need to worry.

That is of course if I saw it correctly, happened fast.

Didn't watch it, but I'm sure there are really good guys that can swap quick and shoot.

I just watched some Mighty Mouse and gsp fights and a lot of those duck under punches to double leg shots need to happen instantly, and I don't wanna be stepping.

Right leg forward, though I am "left handed". Technically I'm ambidextrous though, as I write and use a fork with my left, yet I throw and shoot (As in firearms) with my right.

I switch stances/grips depending on what throw I want to do. I also like getting "left sided" grips just to throw people off.

That's a tough one- for boxing I was in orthodox stance but as far as judo/wrestling I'm stuill trying to fiogure out how to move. Probably left forward as my only takedowns are osoto, seoi, ouchi-kouchi combo sometimes kata guruma. io go for my opponent's right side

Did you ever only shoot from you left and throw with your right?
If so, did you have any difficulties during grip fighting? How did you overcome it?

Left leg forward, right hand dominant, left leg forward shooter. For myself, I find that left leg forward is more beneficial for my shot defense, gives me more leverage regardless of the types of grips I want to apply, and (due to my own fault) my left hip is more flexible than my right, so its easier for me to swing that leg to recover guard or slap a quick submission in.

1. I lead with my right leg.

2. I am left handed.

3. If opponent is leading with left leg, I will go for a single leg.

I usually lead with my left.

I'm right handed.

If someone takes an extreme side on stance I am going for the scissors and laughing on the way down.

I did, but my standup was so underdeveloped that I don't think it matters how I did things back then.

That being said, my grip fighting has always consisted mostly of arm drag/Russian tie set ups. I try never to stay in front of my opponent.

Over all it depends on who I am up against..if it is someone with wrestling back ground..or judo background..etc..but for the most part...

1. Right leg forward
2. left Handed
3. Varies...

I am a defensive/counter fighter...whether it be striking..I will counter, block and attack, dodge and attack...same is true with my jiujitsu, I am more defensive... Therefore, instead of attacking hard to take them down, I usually wait til they try a takedown...read it, counter or stuff it...and take control off their mistake, or missed take down, this isn't always the case..if we both get our grips, and we are doing our little jig..if I see the opportunity, I will take them down, mainly with judo throws or trips... I do not go for double legs...single leg occasionally... Mainly I look to set up a throw, or trip...I do not pull guard unless I am up against like a black belt in judo or something...(tournament wise) at the gym, I may still stand up with the judo black belt, in order to learn from their attacks and defense...

I lead with right leg, as a decoy..because what I a Thaler want to do if. Am going to attack and look for the takedown, is feint withy right hand grabbing their left collar, to make them defend that, when the grip I actually want is my left on their right lapel...usually when I do that I get the grip I want and their right foot is right were I want it..for this one takedown my brother taught me....I do not know he official name..I just texted him, when I get that info I will post it..but it is pretty sweet...

With his right collar gripped with my left hand..my left foot scoops his right foot up, and I grab it with my right hand..shuffle in and use sweep his other leg and end up in side control or knee on belly....

If that doesn't set up right..I just go with the flow and see what presents it's self...

I use the same as my opponent, so both. I do switch here and there, but I'm usually most comfortable when I have the same foot forward as my opponent, but the weird thing is I have the same approach to striking in MMA I drill mostly with my left foot forward because that is where I prefer to be, and my game is different depending on which leg i have forward. Like I generally shoot better for doubles with my right leg forward and prefer clinch and single legs with my left foot forward.

Also, interesting choice on the username....
