started training Muay Thai this week and so far I feel pretty comfortable with everything other than the left hook.
I'm going to ask my trainer about it next week but that's not until Wednesday now, so I'm wondering if there is anything I can practice to get feeling more comfortable with it?
It feels really awkward to throw for me at the minute. I turn my body with the punch maybe from straight to 60 degrees with my fist thumb up. My elbow isn't quite flat with my fist, maybe 10 degrees below.
I'm guessing this is probably common to newbies that aren't used to throwing a jab, cross, hook combo, just looking to feel comfortable with it!

Just shadow box and keep training. Nothing your doing in the first week of training is going to be particularly good, that comes with time and repetition.

You will see how awkward the left hook feels, when you are on the receiving end of it .
As the others stated, practice makes it perfect.

There are different ways to throw hooks in different disciplines. Sounds like ur throwing the hook with ur arm locked in place and turning at the hips.

A good practice for the lead left hook is to -
1. Get in normal stance.
2. Being to slowly punch straight out, with ur elbow tucked close to ur body and ur thumb up.
3. As ur elbow begins to rise up and away from ur body, turn ur thumb so it's almost parallel to the ground instead of straight up while bringing ur fist across ur body in the hooking motion.
4. Turn ur hips as bring fist across ur body.
5. U can bring ur fist right back to the original stance using the reverse movements

Start it very slow and speed up slightly as it feels more natural.

Hope that helps some.

It's your back foot. Make sure it is stable when throwing your left hook.
