what sort of underlying motive would there be for shooting up random people other than to kill as many as you can

There are usually reasons why people go out of their way to plan and execute a mass killing.

Whether that be a 'revenge on the world' for something, political motivation, wanting to be famous, mental breakdown, or whatever other large number of things.

It's pretty normal for people to be curious as to what could lead someone to do such a thing.

sometimes it takes weeks and months even before people come forward.. if i owned a range that this guy used i wouldnt want all that negative attention and cameras in my face..

Even if the owner didn't come forward certainly someone else from the range would have remembered seeing the guy there and ran to the nearest media to give there statement. You know how that plays out.
