So I was watching WEC 4. Kurt Pellegrino vs Mac Danzig was the 3rd to last fight on the card. It was announced as a WEC lightweight championship fight. Kurt won the decision, they put a belt on him, they called him champ. I legit rewatched the pre/post fight parts to make sure I wasn't hearing it wrong.

I have been digging and can find no recognition of him as a WEC champion, or that this bout was a title bout. I even watched a bit of Gilbert Melendez vs Olaf Alfonso ("1st" WEC 155 title bout) to see if the announcers would mention the Kurt/Danzig fight. Nothing was said.

What gives? Does anyone have any idea why it doesn't seem recognized?

According to MMACore it's listed as an amateur fight. So maybe for an amateur title? I've not seen the fight myself.

I remember him. He had blonde hair right.

On Wiki and UFC.com it's listed on his pro record. Wiki said it was his first fight when in the fight the announcer said he moved to 4-0.. I'm not even sure if WEC 3 was recorded. I can't find it anywhere, nor any of the individual fights. maybe just Bush league records keeping from a new org?

It's possible. Maybe it was just a "title fight" for the marquee and forgot. Maybe they just decided to sweep it under the rug seeing as Kurt didn't fight for them again. Either way you might be onto something here lol.

Found this site that acknowledges his title win and subsequent vacancy.

For everyone that has fight pass, this "championship" fight is on there

amateur record of 3-0 plus the win in the wec title fight vs danzig = 4-0. maybe that's part of the confusion.

also, he fought danzig in his first amateur fight, as well as fighting him again in his first pro fight for the wec lightweight title. probably some confusion there as well.

Sadly it's very difficult to find a lot of concrete info on the early days of WEC.

Glad to see at least one site has him listed! I knew I wasn't crazy!

Kurt deserves his due. Not saying this would suggest anything different about how good he is but if he won a title in WEC, he should get recognized. They also didn't ever announce it in his UFC fights. I don't like it.

I always liked Pellegrino, and I like him even more now knowing that he beat Mac Danzig. But this needs to be mentioned as his most notable moment in the UFC.

Just watched that fight. I can't believe the beating Nate took in the 1st round.

He was absolutely dominating that fight too

Just watched Cole Escovedo take the Inaugural 145 lb title in the very next WEC. In the brief description next to the fight on Fight Pass, it said it was the first championship in WEC history. WHAT THE FUCK?!?! They gave Batman a belt and called him champion. Pretty sure it was they exact same looking belt they gave Cole too.

Dude, just wait for the Poppies Martinez era. haha.

Early WEC was sketchy as fuck with the title situations. Just enjoy the ride, and Enjoy Olaf.

WEC 1 was like well-funded backyard brawls with Severn slapped on the end. Early WEC Josh Rosenthal was an early stoppage God. It's great fun.

They're my favorite fight org by far. I care about the UFC less and less with every old WEC guy that retires or leaves.
