And coming from a Kings fan I can tell you that we weren't sweating Kobe except in 4th quarter situations where LA favored him due to Shaq's poor FT%. Kobe was a killer, but he didn't terrify us, and he wasn't the riddle we were trying to solve. He was definitely the sidekick. The two things that we always talked about around the water cooler were how in the hell do you deal with Shaq's presence, and why does Rick Fox mentally own Peja?

Obviously Kobe stopped being the sidekick once Shaq left (since LA knew Kobe was going to assume the role of the hero), and arguably sooner than that, but definitely not during their first 3-peat. He was the sidekick. Was Kobe during those years a better #2 than Pippen? That's actually an interesting question.

I can see an argument being made for Kobe being a legitimate sidekick for the first title w/ Shaq, arguably the second, but not the third. In Kobe's second Finals run w/ Shaq, he averaged 29.4 ppg, 7.3 boards and 6.1 apg for the entire playoffs. If that's a sidekick, it's the greatest sidekick ever. his numbers did drop off slightly for the Finals that year, and Shaq went absolutely apeshit in the Finals, but lets not act like Kobe wasn't doing shit. In the Finals during the third year of the 3peat, Kobe put up 26.8, 5.8 and 5.3 on 51.5 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from 3. Again, Shaq went nuts, but those are outstanding numbers from Kobe, not exactly sidekickish.

Pippen was an anchor defensively and all around solid player, but he never once put up numbers like that. Just saying

kobe was the #2 guy to shaq, but they were arguably the #1 and #2 guys in the whole league. #2's are not all the same. Asking who was better between kobe and pip is no different then asking who was better between jordan and billups since they were both #1's on a title team.

Kobe is a better player overall than Pippen.

Its possible that if Pippen didn't play with Jordan for the majority of his career that we don't know his name today. Shaq, MJ, and Kobe were all #1's and they all made their makrs as #1's at points in their careers. Pippen was a #2 for about 90% of his career and was so great at it that he became a HOF'er doing it.


But Kobe is better.
