Modern English is basically ancient languages from Germany, the Netherlands and Scandanavia. The first place it was written was East Anglia which was of course where the Danish settled and was where Beowulf was written.

There's a few bits of Latin in there as a hangover from the Roman occupation. Some linguists are convinced English is closer to Danish and Norwegian than any other language.
