Knife attack at Chinese school wounds 22 children

Yeah, I read about the knife attack last night, I wasn't really surprised by how many he got, but who he targeted.

yup first we need to ban guns, then we need to ban Knives, after that we'll probably have to ban sharp sticks too.

The implication here is idiotic beyond relevance. Compare the body counts.

The NRA is not unhappy about the stabbings. The thing is, the shootings in America would not have happened.. Has nothing to do with the knife attack.

I'm a gun owner btw.

I think if someone really wanted to kill another person they'll do it. Guns just make it a hell of a lot easier. I remember reading about some arsonist that killed 60 odd people before way back in the day. Early 90s? Murderers find a way. They always do.

This and the Connecticut incident happened today, such a horrible day around the world. Horrible stuff. Prayers go out to all families involved in every one of these sickening attacks.

Not to say what happened isn't horrible, but I'm pretty sure tens of thousands of people die every single day from entirely preventable causes, and no one ever seems to feel any worse for it. Strange how that works.

People only care when it's first world problems.

100 percent true! Too many kids die around the world daily, no one talks about it until it's a first world problem.

I've never cared for this mantra.

To be fair, IMO, many first world countries are first world for the simple reason that they value human life more. We're comparing apples to oranges, here, with the Connecticut/China attacks today, because the latter didn't involve 27 fatalities (including 3/4 of the shooter's family), but beyond that, one of the reasons you don't hear about this stuff may have to do with the fact that the Chinese themselves don't become as enraged. For example, in the past decade alone, something like over 3x the Chinese miners died in mining accidents than the USA had miners die in the entire previous century. Currently, they account for roughly 80% of the world's coal miner deaths, yet produce only 35% of the world's coal. Where is their outrage? Their government is autocratic; nothing prevents them from imposing stricter safety protocol, as we have, to address this problem; nor can it be explained away by totalitarianism. The Chinese government answers to its people just as the American government does to it. The ugly truth one may deduce is that they care less about human loss than they do about profit relative to the too often vilified, "evil" Americans. Look at the bones in the China wall. Some problems are cultural; as has been pointed out in some other threads, today, there are examples of countries with gun laws no less lax than the USA's, but they don't experience the same violent crime or this phenomenon of indiscriminate, mass public executions.

Furthermore, third world countries tend to lack the same communication and news services that first world countries enjoy. This is inherent to the economic differences. Stop blaming third world attitudes on first worlders. Not everything is our fault.

I wouldn't blame it on first worlders but first worlders generally don't care. For instance 1000's of children are dying on the warfare in Syria over the last few months and nobody really.mentions it.

Guess it is the medias fault to an extent.

At least nobody died on this China incident. That Connecticut incident is just ridiculous. Hard to wrap your head around something like that in an advanced nation such as the US.

Do you live in an alternate universe? AP, Reuters, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NPR, and even FOX have been covering Syria and the civilian casualties quite extensively. Perhaps they spend too much time on trivial crap, too, but it's not like they're ignoring it. The BBC has at least one Syrian story in "Top Stories" every day. Wikipedia, The Guardian, Channel 4, The New York Times, the CBC...everybody has covered this.

There's 24 hours in the day, you know, and first worlders have lives. I think your expectation is unrealistic.

In Australia they're probably not covering it much on TV because they're not trying to goad us into joining the coalition forces in a war like they did with "Operation Iraqi Freedom". Back then all you heard was Saddam this and WMD's that, people were practically bracing for all of these terrorist attacks that were gonna happen on our soil. The US has their "freedom fighters" doing all of the fighting for them now so what is the point of reporting it to Aussies. Not like Bush needs our SAS soldiers to do all of his dirty work anymore.. ( I know Obama is the pres btw)

If you want to hear about Syria here you have to go out of your way to search for it on the net.

That's not the point either, I know people have lives but to be honest most people are so ignorant to all around them. Not saying you have to care about it 24/7 but I'll try to discuss these topics with people intelligently sometimes and they'll sort of just shrug it off like "meh who gives a shit it's so far away" or "really? i thought those terrorists are tryna kill us, nuke em all" -- this attitude pissues me off.

I'm not tryna brand people but it's the impression I get around here.

this world is going down the toilet and fast

So fucking sad man....so much for a great birthday for me. I feel for all of the parents affected by this- my son starts preschool soon...

What can we do though? Unless I lived a self sustainable life in the middle of nowhere on a farm there's no getting around these crazy fucking assholes
