Khamzat - Wrestling + BJJ

Khabib - Sambo + Judo + Some wrestling

Khamzat was a wrestling competitor. He is better at shooting for doubles than Khabib, although Khabib has a pretty good sweep single (like the one he hit on Ragin' Al and I think Conor). Although Khabib can sometimes do it too, Khamzat is better at taking someone down right in the middle of the octagon. A very good wrestler that then becomes a BJJ Brown Belt. You can see his BJJ influence as he will usually look to take the back and advance position. He also showed a crazy strong side control last night which he then advanced to a Crucifix multiple times.

Khabib grew up as a Judo and Sambo master, practicing MMA. He probably competed in wrestling as a kid but living in Dagestan he must have noticed he had a bigger future in Sambo/MMA than Judo or Wrestling. So he definitely has very good wrestling but not quite as good as Khamzat. Khabib definitely has better throws though and is better at pushing you against the fence and then getting the takedown.

Khabib clearly has better Ground and Pound. Khabib was the best ever at holding you down and throwing heavy shots. Khamzat looked like he didn't want to open up and give the Uber athletic DDP any space. A couple times he did open with heavier punches DDP escaped. And then later Khamzat tried an Americana from the Crucifix and DDP escaped there as well. Khamzat was really just trying to blanket smother DDP and not give him any space. We have only seen Khabib do that in the 1st round of the Conor fight. Khabib usually smashed people. Think the Barboza fight.

As for submissions, I would say Khabib has the edge. Khamzat is great at getting to the back and has a great Rear Naked Choke. Khabib also has great chokes and has also finished great fighters with Kimuras and Triangles.


Both Khamzat and Khabib are great. They are just different and have different styles

Khamzat by far. No one has stopped his takedown in the opening minute of the fight. He's actually faced guys that have proven grappling defense like Whittaker and DDP.

Khamzat is a better athlete with more explosive takedowns but not quite as good on the ground.
Mak is the more well rounded MMA fighter with a great sub game but a bit below the two others as a wrestler.

Tibau has statistically better TDD% than Usman and Khabib was 23, plus Tibau was seeing Khamzat's epo dealer. Khamzat struggled (again) in the grappling against Usman, like he did against Burns, and just coasted to a decision. Like he just did with DDP.

Nowhere near as dominant a grappler. A wet blanket compared to Khabib.

Khamzat is more athletic, has better quicker more explosive takedowns, is P4P stronger. Khabib has more stamina, better subs and way better GnP. Both super impressive. Adding Khabibs chin and slightly better standup that makes him the better fighter. But Khamzat is still improving and if he keeps on fighting 3-4 years his resume will probably surpass khabib quite significantly.

Khamzat moved up and faced supposedly the biggest strongest MW and still did his thing. Khabib wouldn't dare ever move up even against 40 year old GSP that was basically the same size as him, because he was terrified to face opponents his size that could resist his wrestling after what he experienced vs Tibau, instead feasting on natural 145 kickboxers. Khamzat has already fought Usman as well, one of his worst matchups. There is a difference in mentality between the two for sure.
