Freestyle wrestling has a greater population of countries that practice it
But folkstyle arguably translates better to MMA than freestyle (less emphasis on high-amplitide throws, more emphasis on top control and escapes)
All forms of wrestling - folkstyle, greco, freestyle, Turkish oil wrestling, etc. - have certain advantages that can be applied in MMA. I'd say it largely comes down to how one chooses to use their wrestling. Someone like Gaethje who utilizes folkstyle only defensively doesn't benefit that much from it. It also teaches bad habits like giving up your back.
I'd say Khabib has the best formula when it comes to MMA wrestling. He's trained in freestyle wrestling, sambo, judo, and no-gi grappling and is able to apply all them effectively.
