The latter part is sort of arguable. Despite many thinking that Sambo only exists as a sporting competition with various rulesets, it was initially designed as a discrete martial art with a fairly well-defined curriculum, its own instructors, syllabus, gyms, etc. in order to create a hand-to-hand combat system for the Red Army, i.e. a very literal martial art. And no, I don't think the fact that it combines elements from various extant disciplines into one necessarily disqualifies it from being considered its own discipline, unless you also want to disqualify Judo, Kyokushin, BJJ, Taekwondo, etc.

Most Russian MMA fighters from the Caucasus have a wrestling background. I believe it's the national sport in Dagestan and Chechnya. And in freestyle wrestling which is arguably tougher than NCAA wrestling.

That said, the days of wrestlers dominating MMA are over. Everyone cross trains now and TDD has improved. I'm with you that wrestling is a great base for MMA but it's not enough anymore. Khamzat is successful because he has great grappling and striking to go along with his wrestling.

Freestyle wrestling has a greater population of countries that practice it

But folkstyle arguably translates better to MMA than freestyle (less emphasis on high-amplitide throws, more emphasis on top control and escapes)
