So one ear looks like it will explode at any second and the other is perfectly normal.

This has to be the oddest califlower ear, unless he only grapples and spars on one side.

He may have started wearing ear protection after getting the first cauli, or he may have drained the other ear each time it swelled.

my understanding is that he favors the right side when he is wrestling bears, so it is a little bit worse for wear

That happens to a lot of guys, where they get more cauli on one side than the other.

I dont think ear protection works... will still give you califlower ear because the ear still gets smashed and hit under the plastic.

Hard to say. Some of my sparring partners swore by them. I personally never wore them.
