Media Ken Shamrock Podcast

The Lights out Podcast by Chris Lytle has some excellent interviews on Lions Den guys that sheds a lot of light.
Any specific ones you can recommend?
I mean even Royce Gracie got a TKO.
That's true, isn't it? And it occurs to me that I've never considered a Frank vs Royce fight before, but I wouldn't be surprised if Frank did better than Ken.
Thats interesting, might have to give this one a listen. Frank said he would have loved to have fought BJ in his prime I remember. People forget the phenom he was in manhandled Matt Hughes.

There's not much more in the podcast. According to Ken, BJ wen to train at Frank's school, Frank got his ass kicked, then Frank got angry at one of his staff for not telling him who BJ was.

Thanks for the feedback. Any constructive criticism is much welcomed.
Oh, shit. I'm sorry. I didn't realize this was you in the video. If I had known, I would have been less of a douchebag in my criticism.

When I said you weren't very good, what I meant was that it sounded like any other podcast. It seemed like you didn't do much research on Ken and were just going by things you picked up through osmosis over the years as a fan. The times the podcast was most interesting is in the times you asked questions that were insightful and knowlegeable about Ken, which allowed him to dig deeper than normally required to answer questions he's probably answered millions of times. I felt like you really snapped him out of autopilot and got some real self-reflection from him when you asked about him taking responsibility for people because that's how his dad was. I guess I was disappointed to see you were capable of something like that, but only really tried to do it a few times. He was kind of just talking, but the times you were directing the conversation really elevated the podcast.

Anyways, I'm glad I listened to it, I'm sorry I was a dickbag to you, I hope you take more of a guiding hand in future podcasts, please post more.

Yeah I ask everyone that, sometimes you get some interesting stories

I'm pretty biased against people believing in magic and conspiracy theories when I see all the harm being done around the world right now. I'd be more interested in asking people if they've ever read a science book.

Ken has good social intelligence. The book he wrote with Erick Koch, Inside the Lion's Den, gave good insight into how he thinks about things.

It's just when he would get riled up that he would let things get out of hand. His WWE character fit him well.

Ken always attributes his losses to: the ruleset, injuries, external factors from a-z. I wanted to like him, i really did. I prefer Don Fryes podcast
Wait, I didn't think Ken was Brazilian?

People forget how many fighters have done that...and not just Brazilians. Rampage used every excuse in the book: undertrained, overtrained, was too busy filing the A-Team, opponent was a "gameplan" fighter and I just wanted to brawl, etc.

Early Ken would have handed Frank his ass. Frank would have probably KO'd Ken in later years, I mean even Royce Gracie got a TKO.
Royce won via low blow. The ref should've stopped the fight and let Ken recover. Of course it's the same Gracie family that jumped and seriously injured catch wrestler in Brazil many decades ago. And the same family that cried like babies when Frank Shamrock kneed Renzo on the ground.

That was really cool, never thought of him as a founder of Pancrase. It was interesting to hear him express frustration at the fixed fights. And his voice went really weird when he said "young boys" lol, but I'm pretty sure that was innocent. It just jumped out at me because of the times we're living in.

At the 26 minute mark, he's talking about fighters who betrayed him, took all the things he provided for them and then turned against him. I assume he's talking about Frank, but who else had an acrimonious split with the Lion's Den? I don't remember the politics of the time at all -- that was pre-internet for me, never had a view behind the scenes. I read his book, but don't remember it if he talked about it.

I didn't think the host was very good, but he surprised me a few times with the quality of his questions, like if he took on the responsibility for other people because he was following his dad's lead.

The bit talking about the fight with Frank was iinteresting, that would have been nice to see. Frank was always a much smaller fighter, I agree that he proposed the fight because he thought Ken was hugely diminished in ability. Interesting to hear the story about BJ Penn beating Frank's ass in training because Frank didn't know who BJ was. Also surprising to hear Ken call Frank a good guy.

lol I spoke too soon about the host. "Have you ever had an experience with the supernatural?"
And I might pick current versions of Ken and Frank--age, injuries and all--over the sad current version of BJ.

I agree that the version of Ken who beat Dan Severn in 1995 was too much and too big for Frank. Any version of Ken before he left for pro wrestling (1997 I think?) wins. I also think Ken would've beaten Tito if they fought at HW in the 90s.

Ken was past his prime when he fought tito but idk if it's a closer fight prime vs prime.

True, but they just said "ufc 1 rules" where they were allowed even though obviously everyone had a cup. I really wish Ken hasnt have ended his career like that, he should have fought through it.

Tons. Its basically everything you are looking for in terms of ultra well researched deep dives, hands down the very best MMA podcasts out there.

Relevent to this topic heres just a few with ex Lions Den guys or guys involved around that era that just shares so much behind the scenes and history.

Agreed. If it was Ken vs Tito at UFC 22 instead of Frank I reckon Ken stops him too. That being said if Ken and Frank fought that would have been that best era. Not 2008 or whenever Frank called him out. Ken was washed by that point. Cheers for watching 🤙🏻

No dramas mate, appreciate you taking the time to write a well thought out review. Yeah it’s hard because he’s been on a lotta things over the years, so wanted to pick out different questions but to reiterate his been asked most things all ready haha. And the ones I did ask that he hasn’t been asked kinda lead no were. Outside of the Frank one, I’ve seen a lotta people ask Ken about him but not that fight specifically. And that fight kinda popped up then disappeared.

Will add it’s more difficult doing it online then in person, in person you just get a connection that is hard to replicate over a call. But outside of that I’ve had a couple other UFC fighters on, a moto legend who raced in the 90s and former x3 world boxing champ Lovemore Ndou. I do believe the podcast is a saturated market but I said I’d do one (live, buying a house ect slowed it up haha) so I have to be congruent with what I say and see it through for a bit.

The movies question and supernatural ones are things I tend to ask people in general. Even away from the podcast because some people give great answers. So I’ve add it into the podcast. Mite give good content for the show.

I’m not a magic crystal wearing hippie. I like to be pragmatic. But have seen things I can’t explain in a house I used to live in.

Cheers again. Check out some of the other videos if you ever get time 🙏🏻

I still think Ken beats him any time in the 90s if they fight at HW, which Tito refused to do years later. Prime vs. prime is a little hard to say. I think the 1995 Ken who beat Severn and held his own wrestling against him (a 250+ pound former D1 wrestler) would be a tough opponent for any version of Tito. However, Tito peaked 6-8 years after that when the sport had evolved a lot as far as cross-training, conditioning, etc. which makes it more difficult to assess.

Also, Ken's last MMA fight in the 90s was in 1996 while Tito's first fight was in 1997. So they never could've fought in Ken's prime. Too bad Ken didn't come back to MMA when Tito made him mad (either the Bohlander or Metzger fight) in 1999. Ken's knees were shot by the time he came back from pro wrestling, which wrecked his wrestling.

My favorite is when he claimed that while he's taken steroids that he's never taken them for a fight and has always fought clean.

Was Ken shamrock even skilled at mma? He excel in the primitive age of the sport. He can't hang with Tito.

He's not making butt plugs anymore?

It comes down to wrestling between them. This version of Ken, who more than held his own against a 260-pound former All-American would be a handful for Tito at HW....and Tito wouldn't even fight old Ken at HW.
