“It’s funny to hear these guys talk about toughness and being tough and being bad,” Shamrock told Ariel Helwani of ESPN recently. “It’s like, man, if they only knew what went through in those beginning days, with no training, there was no map of how to train. There were guys that would go to the park and get in fights with people in order to get training, real training in. You’ve seen a lot of guys that would just do a road tour. They’d drive from one end of California to the other end and they would stop at different places and do fights on these different promotions in the beginning days when there was promotions everywhere. They would drive across country just hitting every stop and fighting at them, just to get the training in.”

“There was no map,” Shamrock said. “There was no way of real training. Obviously, early on we were able to develop a way to do that but for most guys you used to hear stories like that all the time about how guys would go to the park and fight or they’d take fights anywhere just so they can actually get in and get a fight somewhere where they really knew what they were doing because back in the day when I was over in Japan, before they even started the UFC, I couldn’t get anybody to train with me. I would go into karate schools and boxing schools, they were striking and you’d take them down and they’d be like ‘No, what are you talking about’ or I’d get a wrestler and say ‘Shoot on me, I’m not gonna knock you out but I’m gonna punch you.’ There was nobody to do that so I had to open a gym and slowly start training people.

“So for them to start talking about being a Bad MF, I just kinda laugh and go, oh my gosh, you guys are wearing four-ounce gloves, you fight one time a night, every six months to a year. Really? [Laughs] Come on.”

I don't even like Diaz nor Masvidal and i think they're overhyped by idiots who fantasize about thugs but this is dumb, very dumb...

Both have been in the fighting game for ages, fighting in backrooms and backyards for peanuts and street cred( and both videotaped too )
so STFU boomer

Well, he has a point.
Yea totally has a fucking point. Look at spoiled Jorge Masvidal who never grew up fighting in backyards. Just was born and became a famous MMA fighter without having to work hard. Ken is a genius for this take.

I agree with Ken. If you have a map you are not tough. Imagine competitive orienteering. Those guys are not tough and have maps... but on the other hand survivor man seems tough and probably does not need a map. That being said I never watched survivor man so Im not sure

What's really sad is spending 15 years trying to stay relevant and failing at it consistently.

well so what Ken if we're gonna play grampa on the rocker then dudes back in the day use to stab each other with spears and shit I bet they just kinda laugh and go, oh my gosh, you guys are fighting for sport and no ones stabbing you with spears and you don't die of a minor infection even if you win

So while Ken deserves all the respect for what he's did it's called context and he has none.

Imagine walking your dog in the park and then Ken Shamrock comes jumping out of the bushes shouting ‘Come on! Shoot on me!’

Remember when Ken "couldn't" choke out Kimbo and then got knocked out....

Maybe he roasted a bit diaz and mas but, more of that, he is ironic about the marketing about that fight.
Sure its part of the game but i found that lame af.
"Oh there we have a fake belt", "he is a motherfucker but we are not even able to say the word itself" etc...it was lame and looked fabricated like their fake belt.
Thats all, that does not mean mas or diaz are not killers and tough guys.
Just means that the UFC pussified itself in order to please a larger audience.
In that sense, i understand shamrock

Hope i don't care about what's considered tough or not when i am in my 50s, who gives a shit.

I'd love to make fun of Ken he's a dummy. But the sport is really stale these days. And it feels like people fight once a year now.

and who the hell publicly wants to admit they are "UFC" fan. Really? the "bad mother fucker belt"? That's like treating the average fan like a middle schooler.
