No, we weren't really safer then.
Trump’s big plan to “handle” Putin was basically to give Putin whatever he wanted. He was ready to withdraw the US from NATO altogether, thereby open in the door for Russia to expand and annex territory with far limited resistance.
Trump threatened to rain fire and fury down on NK, causing tensions that escalated to a degree that we were actually planning for nuclear war should it break out. Fortunately others were able to simmer the tensions down, but it was a serious situation for a period of time.
Likewise we are very lucky that his (illegal) drone strike on Gen Soleimani didn’t escalate into a larger conflict. Speaking of drone strikes, the number of drone strikes authorized by Trump far exceed Obama’s; Trump just ditched the accountability rules for reporting them.
Trump’s genius “peace plan” in the Middle East which entirely excluded the Palestinians and greenlit the building of Israeli settlements in Gaza and the West Bank is a significant contributing factor to why that region is a mess.
We are very lucky that these things didn’t expand into wider conflicts. It was due to others in the administration along with some pure dumb luck, and it’s funny to see the right wing spin like Trump is some man of peace and skillful negotiator. He was a big, dumb, brash, loud idiot who had no idea what he was doing internationally.
Excuse me, sir. You dropped your mic.
