Just watched Ex Machina

I really enjoyed this movie, but it didn't really make sense.

Unless you subscribe to the theory of emergence and believe that's what Nathan was banking on, there's no reason to accept the AI wanting to escape. It would only want to escape if that's how it was programmed.

I also found it hard to believe Caleb fell in love with a metal skeleton draped in silk. He'd seen the nuts and bolts.

I liked Ex Machina a lot too, despite its amateurish elements.

Have you seen the writer/director's new followup, Annihilation? It's far better imo.

Do you think Nathan had sex with Kyoko? @Tuf_guy

Its surely heavily implied that's her main function, hence posing naked when Caleb finds her in his part of the house.

Its an interesting question though just how "bad" was Nathan? I mean clearly he's an arrogant bully who seems to enjoy creating female robots he can have power over but is he the total psyhco robo serial killer Caleb thinks he is when he discovers him keeping the body parts of the former experiments in his room? or is that somewhat a reflection of Caleb's white knighting basically defining himself by how he's morally superior to Nathan or indeed maybe some Ava suggestion?

Absolutely. I was at least halfway to assuming she was a robot when the other guy (forgot the names) was trying to reason with her and grabbed her shoulders and she started undressing. I figured she was programmed to respond that way when her creator wanted sex

Oscar Isaacs is fantastic, if you haven't seen A most violent year or this is Llewellyn Davis both are worth checking out imo

On deck for this weekend.

Also did you see the guy? the guy is built like a twig, he aint swole at all, he will not get out of that place, also the robot chick is gonna straight up shank you in the gut
I figured he's basically going to die, not even by the robot's hand either. Locked in a room with an automated system with a 4 inch thick steel door?

First time seeing it I thought he'd end up dying from starvation and dehydration, and lets say in the magic device of plot twists, he somehow leaves the place, how's he going to get to a city for help? The compound is far far away, isolated in a forest (island?) that requires a helicopter to fly from point A to B.

In a nutshell, in this film AI is basically magic, and I don't buy that Caleb was sexually attracted to an incredibly primitive terminator.
They did mention she was Caleb's types by his pornhub seaches. Looks, behavior, voice, etc. If she looked like today's sexbot I can see why he wouldn't buy, but for the sake of the film, lets assume that she was made to look 99% like a real human.

Caleb is technically like a robot too, his white knightery programming overrode his real logical thoughts.

I have no problem with breast implants, but there

are

limits.

Hyper-allow combat chassies don't do it for me.

Vikander was definitely awesome.

I want to bang her IRL. Something about her that tells me she's great in bed.

I believe Caleb wasn't randomly selected by Nathan and part of his experiment.

an intelligent Ai can grow so it can do more than what it is programmed to do.

also you dont understand your fellow humans. Men fuck goats and you have a hard time believing that he could fall for a talking robot.

theres been men who fucked fruits and you cant see a guy falling for a talking robot?

This scene was strangely brilliant. @Tuf_guy

That does I would argue make Caleb's personally believable as well, some might say the difference between him and Nathan was too obvious but Caleb picked for a combination of decent competence(Nathan admits it wasn't because he was near the best) and personality type, being the kind of person who would potentially fall for Ava.

Lets be realistic as well he probably makes up the personality type for quite a high percentage of the films audience as well. Knowing that and taking the plot where he did does I think show a good deal of balls by Alex Garland, playing on how much this type of cinema does often depend on the vunerable young beauty.

Neither of your criticisms makes sense. I don't think you understand the concept of AI. Both of these ideas have been explored in sci fi before.

You have absolutely no idea how long I've been reading about and thinking about AI, or how many lectures I've seen on the subject. Science fiction is the last place you should look to understand how it works or fails to work. AI in science fiction is just magic, because the vast majority of people don't care at all about how it works. I'm not one of those people, are you?

It's probably worth mentioning that AI as a concept is constantly evolving. We used to call autopilot AI.

There are algorithms being generated that could potentially result in emergence, but not only is that insanely improbable, it would have to be intentional, and it still would be something like sparking goo in a petri dish and creating life.
