People are very concerned about crossing borders and going through airports too. The possible hostility and overreach of border security, immigration and even law enforcement officers. Not necessarily the end destination. Disneyworld would probably fantastic but it's the getting there and getting home that could be sketchy.

This is actually a very real risk. Our university actually instituted an advisory after two Iranian born Ph.D students were denied entry at the Windsor/Detroit crossing.

Anecdotally my wife wants us to cancel our planned family trip to Disneyworld in early 2026 over the deteriorating Canada/US relations. I told her we’d see how my trip to New Orleans in August for a conference I’m supposed to attend goes before we make any decisions. That’s assuming that trip doesn’t end up getting canceled as a result of all the rhetoric. I’m Chair of an organization I volunteer with and the conference is in relation to that organization’s line of work. The organization could potentially say they won’t approve my going to the conference anymore and pull my funding if there’s enough concern among the rest of the Board.

Tourism contributes something like $2.4 trillion to the US economy.

There was a thread back in 2018 about US tourism. So I think he thinks that’s me. I’ve only had one account and I’ve never been carded.
Since then, We've got the Elon Musk Doge power grab & salute, Jan6 pardons for white supremacists, a trade war, refugees being jailed in El Salvador along with gang members, JD Vance burning international diplomacy to the ground, Canadians, Asians and Europeans being pulled over and harassed or detained for no reason. So recent events had me asking the same question again.

I explained the rationale in a separate post. I’m not suggesting anything would be different about the visit to Disney World per se, other than it possibly being more expensive as a result of tariffs likely worsening the exchange rate for Canadian to US dollars. The concern about anything “happening” would be more in relation to getting harassed more than normal by US border security and customs officials, with a worst case scenario of being detained over bogus reasons. Your response to @koquerelle about Americans roaming around with pitchforks looking for Canadians is not something anyone is suggesting would happen and is an extreme straw man.

Beyond any concerns (legitimate or otherwise) about anything happening is that it’s more just an attitude of “fuck the US, let’s not waste our time and money there” attitude from my wife and from the organization I volunteer with if the Board was to revoke my funding for attending that conference in New Orleans.
