Dragonlord's Review of JURASSIC WORLD (No Spoilers)

Bottom Line: The Indominus Rex and the Raptors shine through but it's the uninteresting human characters, cringey dialogue and recycled ideas that bedim the film.

jurassic-world_still.jpg

Synopsis: Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor's interest, which backfires horribly.

Review: Director Colin Trevorrow steps in to revive a dormant franchise which pays homage to the original Jurassic Park while subsequently ignoring the two sequels that followed it. Trevorrow foregoes the sense of wonder and science (can't blame him though since it's already been done) and instead focuses more on the action adventure aspects. There's plenty of meta references/social commentary and nostalgic nods to the original film. Unfortunately, the dull human characters are the weakest part of the film.

Chris Pratt was adequate as the leading man Owen Grady, a former Navy guy and the park's Raptor trainer. Though he plays the character a bit more serious than his Star-Lord role in Guardians of the Galaxy, there's just a sense of staleness to Pratt's performance that makes me question his newfound leading man status. Josh Brolin almost got Pratt's role and the True Grit actor's solemnity and gruffness would have been a better fit for this film. It also doesn't help that Pratt had a really awkward scene with Bryce Dallas Howard early on with the most cringeworthy dialogue.

The other main characters are a bust. Howard plays the park operations manager and becomes intolerable as the film progressed. Kept on thinking Charlize Theron would have nailed the role perfectly. The two brothers played by Ty Simpkins and Nick Robinson are too uninteresting to follow and the older brother's emo schtick gets annoying very fast. Judy Greer, who plays their mother, should have been with the two on their adventures. They also showed multiple unnecessary scenes of the older brother staring at girls on the park but it just comes across as creepy.

The human characters might have been a failure but fortunately the Indominus Rex shines through. A hybrid from dinosaur and animal gene mixing, the Indominus Rex is a terrific, unstoppable villain that provides a great deal of scary moments. The execution for the "domesticated" Raptors concept was well done and believable. Though it's been shown in the trailers, Pratt riding with the Raptors to battle was still badass. The CGI effects are superb and the exhilarating third act is a monster mash mayhem heaven.

Preliminary Rating: 6.5/10

JURASSIC WORLD Roars Past $1B Overseas in Rare Milestone

2ived79.jpg

In a fitting end to Universal's record summer, Jurassic World has roared past the $1 billion mark at the overseas box office, joining a tiny club whose other members are Avatar, Titanic and this year's Furious 7, not accounting for inflation.

The milestone gives Universal bragging rights to two of the movies: Jurassic World and Furious 7. Fox is home of Avatar and Titanic, both from director James Cameron. Through Sunday, Jurassic World has grossed $1.003 billion internationally. That compares to $2.03 billion for Avatar (2009), $1.53 billion for Titanic (1997) and $1.16 billion for Furious 7, released in April 2015.

Also this weekend, Universal jumped the $6 billion mark in global box office receipts for the year, by far the biggest showing in history for a Hollywood studio. That includes $2.16 billion domestically and $3.89 billion internationally. Last month, Universal surpassed the industry record set by Fox in 2015 with $5.53 billion.

Jurassic World, produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, has earned a total of $1.65 billion worldwide, already making it the No. 3 title of all time behind Avatar and Titanic. In North America, its earnings are $647.5 million, putting it at No. 3 behind Avatar ($760.5 million) and Titanic ($658.7 million).

Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the reboot of the classic dinosaur franchise stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. The movie's final market is Japan, where it has conquered the box office with $63.1 million in its first 30 days.

JURASSIC WORLD Sequel Officially Announced for June 22, 2018

Jurassic-World-Pratt-Howard-070515-Dragonlord.jpg

Universal has announced that a sequel to Jurassic World will be released on Friday, June 22, 2018. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will return to star. Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, who did a rewrite on World, will write the script for the sequel.

Steven Spielberg will return to executive produce and Frank Marshall to produce. Trevorrow, who is not expected to return to direct, will also be an executive producer on the Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment sequel. The film currently has the 2018 date to itself.

Jurassic World, which opened in theaters in June, has been one of the biggest successes in the history of Universal. It is now the No. 3 domestic release of all time with $614.3 million, and the No. 3 worldwide release of all time. It's broken a slew of records, and has earned $1.5 billion worldwide to date.

JURASSIC WORLD Becomes No. 3 Movie of All Time Worldwide

Jurassic-World-062815-Dragonlord.jpg

The opening weekend record was just the beginning. Universal Pictures' Jurassic World is the biggest hit of 2015, and following a massive $208.8 million opening weekend - which surpassed previous record holder The Avengers - the film continued to climb up both the domestic and international charts.

Well the dino-hit has notched another milestone in its belt, and this one’s a biggie: At $1.522 billion worldwide, Jurassic World has now become the third highest grossing film of all time, sitting behind Titanic at No. 2 with $2.186 billion and Avatar at No. 1 with $2.788 billion (per THR). In order to hit that spot, Jurassic World edged out - you guessed it - Marvel's The Avengers, which was the previous No. 3 with $1.520 billion.

Now this doesn't account for inflation, which posits a very different list (domestically, accounting for inflation, the top three films are Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, and The Sound of Music), but it's still a boatload of money any way you slice it. And with the number three spot, Jurassic World has solidified itself in movie history as one of the biggest films ever made.

JURASSIC WORLD Sets Record for Fastest Race to $1 Billion

Jurassic-World-Chris-Pratt-Running-Dragonlord.jpg

Jurassic World truly is the Indominus Rex of the box office. After snatching the U.S. opening box office crown away from The Avengers last weekend, Jurassic World has just beat fellow Universal sequel Furious 7 to become the fastest film to ever hit the $1 billion mark. More details about the Jurassic World billion dollar box office take after the jump.

Universal Pictures announced today that Jurassic World has crossed $1 billion at the box office in just 13 days. The dino adventure is now the 22nd film ever to join the billion-dollar club, and the third this year after Furious 7 and Avengers: Age of Ultron. In addition, Jurassic World now holds the title for highest-grossing second week at the U.S. box office.

Furious 7 set the previous record for reaching $1 billion, 17 days, this past April. Before that, Avatar set the record in 2009 by climbing to $1 billion in 19 days. Avatar's record was later tied by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) and The Avengers (2012).

It was never in doubt that Jurassic World would do well at the box office, but its performance has surpassed even the most optimistic predictions. That was true in its first weekend, and it was true in its second. On Sunday Universal estimated a $102 million take for Jurassic World's second weekend, but actual numbers showed the film pulled in $106.6 million.

Real-Life Jurassic Park Would Cost Over $23 Billion to Build

Jurassic-World-Gyrosphere-Dragonlord.jpg

Not even Jurassic World's insane box office return could support a fraction of the cost it would require to build a real-life dinosaur park. If the events of the Jurassic movies didn't make it clear enough a dinosaur park is an awful idea, the required investment will probably slam the gates of Jurassic Park.

Just how much would it take to build a real Jurassic Park? Well, the two islands alone would cost about $10 billion dollars according to estimates based on two islands amounting to 66 square miles off the coast of Costa Rica. The research and legal team (better spend a little extra on legal and insurance!) would amount to almost $8 million dollars!

Then, of course, the park would have to create dinosaur clones which racks up the tab another $8.5 million dollars. Getting that DNA in the first place - $9 million. The park itself, based on the cost of the world's largest theme parks, clocks in at $1.5 billion. That seems to be modest, too, for a park containing dinosaurs. We're not done. The park isn't going to run itself. Employees and operating expenses would cost over $11 billion a year. $32 million a day and we're still. Not. Done. The dinosaurs need to be fed and cared for which is going to cost over $200 million a year.

Stupeflix estimates the total of all of these expenses comes to $23,432,400,000. If you happen to have that chunk of change laying around, do us all a favor and make Jurassic Park a thing. That is, if you can manage to swing to $11,907,000,000 it would cost yearly to keep the park operating - not including lawsuits for guests who get eaten.

JURASSIC WORLD Breaks Record with $209M Opening Weekend

xawc5d.jpg

Obliterating all expectations, Universal's Jurassic World roared to a record $209 million-plus debut in North America, the biggest of all time and rescuing the action-adventure franchise from the brink of extinction 22 years after Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park first hit theaters. Globally, Jurassic World also posted the biggest weekend debut of all time with $516 million-plus.

The $150 million tentpole, bestowed with an A CinemaScore, proves that dinosaurs are every bit as potent as superheroes: Jurassic World bests the $207.4 million launch of The Avengers in May 2012. On Sunday, Jurassic World's estimated weekend was $204.6 million, but the number was revised upwards when traffic was bigger than expected for the day, even with competition from the NBA championship game.

Globally, the movie posted the largest weekend bow in history, eclipsing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 ($483.2 million) and becoming the first film to ever cross $500 million in one weekend, thanks to an international haul of $307.2 million from 66 markets, the second-biggest foreign opening after Deathly Hallows 2 ($314 million).

Colin Trevorrow Won't Direct the Next JURASSIC PARK Film

Colin-Trevorrow-Director-Jurassic-World-052814-Dragonlord.jpg

Early tracking has Jurassic World set to open as high as $130 million, but the director Colin Trevorrow has already decided one Jurassic Park film is enough. At the Paris, France World Premiere he confirmed that he won't direct another installment in the series.

"Jurassic Park is like Star Wars. Different directors can give a different taste to each movie," Trevorrow told BadTaste.it. "I would be involved in some way, but not as director." Outside of Jurassic World, Trevorrow has only directed one other feature film, 2012's Safety Not Guaranteed.

The early buzz on Jurassic World after the premiere is that he did a fine job on the film. Keep in mind that this is a premiere screening, so some of the audience may be high on the hype of the movie and the allure of the event. But some are also usually the biggest fans who are sometimes harder to impress, especially with a sequel to a modern classic like Jurassic Park. Even so, early reactions on Twitter seem to indicate that this is the best sequel in the franchise, and it's finally a worthy follow-up to Steven Spielberg's original.

JURASSIC WORLD Tracking for $130 Million Opening Weekend

2q80qxv.jpg

Tracking for the next installment in the Universal Pictures franchise Jurassic World came out yesterday, and it looks like it's heading for a $100 million-$130 million opening, in line with Warner Bros.' Man Of Steel which opened to $116.6 million in the summer of 2013. Man Of Steel ended its domestic run with $291 million.

From the tracking we are looking at right now, total awareness for the film is in the 90% range and unaided awareness is higher than Warner Bros.' big disaster movie San Andreas which opens next weekend starring social media giant Dwayne Johnson. Jurassic World, which stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, doesn't open until June 12 ... so early tracking on that is pretty great.

The question, however, is how many more $100 million-plus openings might we see this summer after Jurassic World? Mmmaybe one? There are tons of titles on their way and advanced ticket sales just began today for Paramount's Terminator Genisys ... and that doesn't open until July 1. Titles yet to come that could hit $100M on opening weekend include Universal's Minions on July 10 and the wild card Ant-Man from Disney/Marvel on July 17. The Disney/Marvel marketing machine has been pretty successful, but a big question mark remains over this one. Anything else, probably not.

Jurassic Park's Original T-Rex Confirmed for JURASSIC WORLD

Jurassic-Park-T-Rex-Ending-Dragonlord.jpg

As speculated by fans back when the first trailer of Jurassic World was released, Slashfilm has confirmed that the Tyrannosaurus Rex seen in the fourth film will be the same one who famously saved the heroes of Jurassic Park from a grisly end by the Velociraptors.

Almost immediately after the photo was released of the Jurassic World t-rex, fans noticed that the scars depicted on its neck matched up with injuries sustained by the tyrannosaurus who saved Alan, Ellie and the kids from raptors in the third act of Jurassic Park.

In a feature about the film's special effects, SlashFilm has now confirmed that it's the same beast. "Yeah. I mean, we took the original design and obviously, technology has changed," said director Colin Trevorrow. "So, it's going to move a little bit differently, but it'll move differently because it's older. And we're giving her some scars and we're tightening her skin. So, she has that feeling of, like, an older Burt Lancaster. And this movie is her Unforgiven."

There's been some rumblings that the T-Rex could be a major player in the plot of the new film, potentially serving as a natural opponent to the artificially-created dinosaur who serves as the movie's main antagonist. This wouldn't be all that surprising, given that Jurassic World has taken great pains so far to try and invoke the first film. Jurassic World opens on June 12, 2015.

Jurassic Park Sequels Will Be Ignored in JURASSIC WORLD

Jurassic-Park-3-Sam-Neil-Dragonlord.jpg

For Jurassic Park fans who were disappointed by The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III, they're in luck. This summer's installment, Jurassic World, is sending both installments' events straight into extinction.

Jurassic World, billed as a direct sequel to Stephen Spielberg's original Jurassic Park, will apparently ignore the much-maligned sequels. While not explicitly writing them out of continuity, Jurassic World simply won't bother addressing each installment's events. But since both films took place on a separate island, writing them out was a fairly easy task for director Colin Trevorrow.

Instead, Jurassic World will only build off of the first installment's story. Taking place twenty years after the events of Jurassic Park, the Chris Pratt-starring film will continue the story set on Isla Nubar, which now has a fully-functioning dinosaur theme park. Jurassic World opens June 12, 2015.

Indominus Rex Wreaks Havoc in 2nd JURASSIC WORLD Trailer

Jurassic-World-Mosasaurus-042015-Dragonlord.jpg

Universal has released a new trailer for Jurassic World with plenty of new exciting footage. Set 22 years after the events in Steven Spielberg's 1993 film, Jurassic World begins with Dr. John Hammond's life-long dream being realized, and Isla Nublar fully functioning as a dinosaur theme park. Unfortunately, however, the novelty of living dinos has worn off, and the executives work to find a way to boost ticket sales once again. Their solution is to genetically create a new dinosaur – known as the Indominus Rex ... but this plan backfires when the incredibly dangerous creature manages to escape its pen and stir up some chaos.

Prior to the big trailer reveal, Universal released a crop of Jurassic World posters, highlighting the snout of the Indominus Rex, a Great White Shark-gorging sea beast, and Pratt riding to the rescue with his raptor army. But it looks like none of them are capable of withstanding Indominus. The people running Jurassic World did their jobs so well that they created a monster that can tear metal vehicles to shreds, is smart enough to rip the tracking device out from underneath its own skin, and likes to kill brontosauruses for fun. If you weren't on board for the latest venture to Isla Nublar, this new trailer should do the trick.

Colin Trevorrow directs the new film based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Derek Connolly and the excellent cast includes Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simkins, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy, BD Wong, and Judy Greer. Jurassic World will be in theaters on June 12th.

First Trailer for JURASSIC WORLD Delivers Prehistoric Mayhem

Jurassic-World-Pratt-Howard-112514-Dragonlord.jpg

The last words anyone wants to hear before they visit a theme park populated by dinosaurs is: "If something chases you: Run!" It's a statement that promises all sorts of prehistoric mayhem, and the first trailer for Jurassic World delivers just that in full. The movie takes place 22 years after Jurassic Park and is set on a fully functional park on Isla Nublar. The folks running Jurassic World think genetically modified dinosaurs are a good idea, and so naturally bad things happen.

Amongst the numerous monsters teased in the clip are a humongous crocodile-like creature that devours a shark, a horde of bipeds frolicking through an open field and a clan of raptors that converge alongside Chris Pratt as he speeds through the jungle on a motorcycle. Jurassic World also features a "genetically modified hybrid" creature that's apparently as smart as it is bloodthirsty. As Pratt dryly puts it: "You just went and made a new dinosaur? Probably not a good idea."

The highly-anticipated Jurassic World is being produced by the original film's director, Steven Spielberg, and is slated to open June 12th, 2015 - some 14 years after the franchise's last entry. It's directed by Colin Trevorrow, the filmmaker behind the Sundance sleeper hit Safety Not Guaranteed.

First Images from JURASSIC WORLD; Park Brochure Revealed

Universal has released three new images from Jurassic World. (Click HERE to see the images.) The film takes place 22 years after Jurassic Park and is set on a fully functional park on Isla Nublar. Details are still under wraps, but director Colin Trevorrow says that the film will have new dinosaurs created by the park's geneticists.

We get our first look at Chris Pratt's character and co-stars Nick Robinson (The Kings of Summer) and Ty Simpkins (Iron Man 3). The film opens June 12, 2015, and also stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D'Onofrio, Irrfan Khan, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy, and Judy Greer.

Come June 12, 2015, Jurassic Park will be a fully operational park and every park needs a brochure. How else would you know where to catch the Mosasaurus Feeding Show or how to get to the official Jurassic Park golf course? Because who wouldn't want to squeeze in a quick 18 during a trip to a facility filled with creatures that have been extinct for about 65 million years? The Jurassic World brochure has popped up online and it's got a list of park highlights, the types of dinosaurs on display, a map of Isla Nublar and even some very familiar sponsors, too. Facebook Users Outraged at Steven Spielberg for Killing a Dinosaur

Steven-Spielberg-Jurassic-Park-Triceratops-Dragonlord.jpg

Will there be a boycott of Jurassic World? There just might be, as some Facebook users are outraged over the thought of executive producer Steven Spielberg killing an innocent dinosaur. Over the last several weeks, there has been a large uproar over a Texas cheerleader posting photos of herself with animals she's hunted and killed.

As a parody meme, Facebook user Jan Branscomb posted an old photo of Steven Spielberg posing with a Triceratops prop from Jurassic Park, and he wrote, "Disgraceful photo of recreational hunter happily posing next to a triceratops he just slaughtered. Please share so the world can name and shame this despicable man."

The meme has quickly gone viral, picking up over 7,000 comments, 13,000 likes, and 38,000 shares on Facebook. The funny thing is that many in the comments seem to be genuinely upset over the photo and have been condemning Spielberg for killing the dinosaur. Of course, a lot of people are likely just going along with the joke, but at least a few do seem to not realize it's just a movie prop.

New Monstrous Dinosaur in JURASSIC WORLD Gets a Name

Jurassic-World-Logo-052114-Dragonlord.jpg

JoBlo posted a lot of interesting rumors a few days ago regarding Universal's Jurassic World. One portion dealt with the latest dinosaur that will terrorize the park. The dinosaur is described as having "instant camouflage abilities, like the cuttlefish, so he blends into the background, is smart like the velociraptor, uses his jaw like a snake, and can terrorize like the T-Rex." Of course a dino that badass needs a name, here it is.

What JoBlo did not mention however is the name of this super predator, which we now know thanks to Scified's source. The name of this new super predator is officially known as Diabolus Rex or "D-Rex" for short. The creature is a spliced breed of Tyrannosaur with bits of Raptor and Cuttlefish, allowing it to camouflage itself with its surroundings. It's a badass and is the primary reason why things at this new park run amock.

Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the story is set 22 years after the events of the first film. The film stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D'Onofrio, Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy, Nick Robinson, Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, and Judy Greer. Jurassic World opens June 12, 2015.

New Monstrous Dinosaur and Details for JURASSIC WORLD

Jurassic-World-Concept-Art-051914-Dragonlord.jpg

Jurassic World will be a real running theme park, complete with a monorail (as teased in recent concept art), shops, rides, and shows. It's the most popular theme park and a family destination. To get there you have to take a high speed shuttle boat from Florida. Inside the park there are a multitude of activities, including a Dino petting zoo and a Hologram info center where you can learn about the methods they are using to create dinosaurs (an enhanced version of the original one). One of the rides is called a "Gyrosphere" that you can get in and ride around in the wild to get up close to the Dinos.

Business is good at the park, but the powers that be start to dream up new ways to keep customers coming back; namely by splicing Dino DNA with other dinos (and other species). That becomes the problem. They splice together a T-Rex, raptor, snake, and cuttlefish to create a monstrous new dino that, of course, gets loose and terrorizes the park. Nothing like a little greed and human arrogance to ruin a good thing, right? Dino expert Jack Horner has teased this bad boy since last year and now we have an idea why he says we'll want to "keep the lights on" after seeing it. He may be right.

According to JoBlo's source, there will be lots of Dino on Dino fighting, as some of the Dinos are "good guys" that are trained by Chris Pratt's character. The raptors and T-Rex are among the "trained" good dinosaurs. The big bad dinosaur has instant camouflage abilities, like the cuttlefish, so he blends into the background, is smart like the velociraptor, uses his jaw like a snake, and can terrorize like the T-Rex. Does this mean the new dino will be the ONLY "bad" one? Or will there be more than one? Unconfirmed, but it will be the catalyst that kicks off the peril.

LOST Composer Michael Giacchino to Score JURASSIC WORLD

Michael-Giacchino-Jurassic-World-Dragonlord.jpg

Having previously applied his immense talent to the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible franchises in addition to the upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino will now take on another beast of a franchise: Jurassic Park. THR reports that Giacchino will be scoring director Colin Trevorrow’s upcoming sequel Jurassic World, with an aim to honor John Williams’ iconic work while also creating “something bold and new for people who love dinosaurs.” Giacchino isn’t the first new composer to step into the Jurassic Park world, as Don Davis took over the franchise on Jurassic Park III.

Giacchino—whose consistently fantastic work ranges from Up to Lost to The Incredibles—has a unique connection to the Jurassic Park franchise, as his first composing job was to write the score for the The Lost World video game. In addition to Apes, Giacchino’s 2014 credits include the sci-fi epic Jupiter Ascending and the ensemble dramedy This Is Where I Leave You. Jurassic World opens in theaters on June 12, 2015.

Colin Trevorrow Talks JURASSIC WORLD, Sequels and More

Colin-Trevorrow-Jurassic-World-042314-Dragonlord.jpg

Filming on Jurassic World is currently underway in Hawaii, but Colin Trevorrow took some time to reveal a few more details about the film. It should have gone without saying, but he said anyway, “We definitely talked about [sequels] a lot,” the director/co-writer revealed. “We wanted to create something that would be a little bit less arbitrary and episodic, and something that could potentially arc into a series that would feel like a complete story.”

“[Omar Sy] He’s essentially Chris Pratt’s best friend,” he said of the Sy character. “They work together and have some pretty cool action scenes together. I wanted to create a relationship there that could be memorable and potentially carry on to future films.”

Trevorrow revealed the welcome news that the dinosaurs won’t be entirely CGI and there will still be animatronic special effects. He also explain the larger conflict within the film: “It’s about alpha dominance and the fact that humans have been the alpha species for a very long time”, he explained, “and so now we’ve brought back another that happened to be the alpha species during its time, and we have to co-exist, so what is that relationship?”

Vincent D'Onofrio to Play the CFO Villain in JURASSIC WORLD

Vincent-Donofrio-Jurassic-World-022814-Dragonlord.jpg

In an inspired casting choice, Universal Pictures has turned to Vincent D’Onofrio to play the villain in Jurassic World, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap. Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) is directing from a script he wrote with Derek Connolly, though plot details remain under wraps. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard star alongside Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins. An individual familiar with the casting breakdown tells TheWrap that D’Onofrio will play the CFO of the Patel Corporation who projects the image of a normal family man to mask a hidden edge. Jurassic World opens on June 12, 2015.

D’Onofrio is a potent choice to join the franchise, as he knows how to play both menacing and sleazy. Over the course of his esteemed career, he has played crazed Private Pyle in Full Metal Jacket, a racist, homicidal LAPD cop in Strange Days, a freaky-looking alien in Men in Black, a comatose serial killer in The Cell, a sadistic drug dealer Pooh-Bear in The Salton Sea and a double-crossing scoundrel in Escape Plan, which may come the closest to his Jurassic World character.

JURASSIC WORLD Set 22 Years After Events of JURASSIC PARK

Jurassic-World-White-Logo-Dragonlord.jpg

Before Universal Pictures announced Jurassic World with its summer 2015 release date, the actor who played Dr. Allen Grant in Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III, Sam Neill, had suggested that the fourth film would be a big reboot, or "a total re-jig" of the dino franchise. Well, that's not the case according to director Colin Trevorrow, who has taken to his Twitter account to set the speculation straight. "Reboot is a strong word," he noted in response to another tweet. "This is a new sci-fi terror adventure set 22 years after the horrific events of Jurassic Park," Trevorrow added. 22 years will be an accurate timespan in 2015 as the original Jurassic Park movie was released in 1993.

With that said, we can safely add Jurassic World to the overloaded list of anticipated sequels of 2015. Possibly starring Chris Pratt as "a rugged ex-military man," and Bryce Dallas Howard as a "smart corporate scientist," with young actors Ty Simpkins and Nick Robinson playing her nephews, Jurassic World is produced by Steven Spielberg, and is set for release on June 12, 2015.

With his film career on fire thanks to the upcoming Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt is being sought to star in Universal’s Jurassic World, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap. Discussions are still in the very early stages, as Pratt would have to navigate the Jurassic World shooting schedule with that of his TV series Parks and Recreation — provided it gets renewed by NBC — as well as overcome several other obstacles in the way. Pratt doesn’t have any projects lined up aside from his TV commitment.

Josh Brolin had been circling the lead role in Jurassic World though talks failed to lead to a deal. Should Pratt choose to accept a plum part in Universal’s summer tentpole, he would join Bryce Dallas Howard, Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins in the 3D sequel, which is also courting Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi) for a supporting role. Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) is directing from a script he wrote with Derek Connolly.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bryce Dallas Howard's character is a "smart corporate scientist," while Ty Simpkins and Nick Robinson will play her nephews. And Chris Pratt's role is "a rugged ex-military man," who Josh Brolin was initially in talks for. Jurassic World opens on June 12, 2015.

[Update: Ron Howard confirmed Chris Pratt will star in Jurassic World when he tweeted that “Bryce and Chris meet for the 1st time on red carpet they will be co-stars in next Juraissic.”]

Jurassic Park IV Titled JURASSIC WORLD; Set for June 12, 2015

Universal-Pictures-Jurassic-World-Dragonlord.jpg

Only a few hours after Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean 5 vacated its prime July 10, 2015 release date in favor of giving the directors some more time to work on the script, Universal has swooped in and plotted June 12, 2015 as the official release for Jurassic Park 4, which is officially titled Jurassic World. The film currently has that release date all to itself, though Assassin’s Creed and Pixar’s Inside Out are scheduled for release the following weekend. Nevertheless, Jurassic World should make a very nice addition to the insane slate of films set to be released in 2015.

That official title is quite curious, as it seems to jibe with earlier information that points at a new kind of park being the focus of the Jurassic Park sequel. Director Colin Trevorrow is credited with penning the screenplay alongside Derek Connolly, which appears to suggest that his rewrites to Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver’s draft were significant. With a release date now officially set, we should start to hear casting news over the next few months as production gets ready to begin early next year. The film will be shot and released in 3D.

Possible Awesome Story Details Revealed for JURASSIC PARK IV

Jurassic-Park-IV-Art-Plesiosaur-Dragonlord.jpg

A rumored plot synopsis for Jurassic Park IV has landed online, and it’s definitely an ambitious scale for the dinosaur-laden franchise entry. While the previous three entries have all centered on dinos running wild amidst relatively remote locations (save for the lackluster San Diego sequence in The Lost World), if this purported plot synopsis is to be believed, we’re going to be seeing some rather crazy commotion in JP4. Per the folks over at JoBlo, the sequel will actually involve that fully functioning amusement park that so many entrepreneurs have tried to get off the ground in the previous films:

"Jurassic Park 4, set in present day Isla Nublar, is now an actual theme park, as originally intended by John Hammond in the first film. It garners 10 million visitors per year and is completely safe – until it’s not. The park itself is described as very Sea World-esque and includes an area called the Isla Nublar Lagoon. That means underwater dino’s for the first time. No indication of what kind, but there’s concept art showing one of the aquatic dino’s, as part of a show, jumping out of the lagoon and eating a strung up great white shark like it was a fish for a dolphin at sea world."

The report claims that the film will include tamed dinosaurs as part of the park’s attractions, with the Velociraptors actually aiding the film’s heroes to combat a brand new dinosaur that turns out to be much smarter than originally thought. Again, this plot synopsis has yet to be confirmed. It’s also in keeping with Trevorrow’s previous hint that the film takes place on Isla Nublar. Steven Spielberg is apparently working with Trevorrow and producers right now on the script for Jurassic Park 4 before he goes off to make his next film.

Universal Puts JURASSIC PARK 4 on Hold Due to Script Changes

Jurassic-Park-IV-Logo-Dragonlord.jpg

Jurassic Park 4 is hitting the pause button. The dinosaur sequel, being directed by Colin Trevorrow, was due to begin production June 24 for a release date of June 13, 2014. But on Wednesday the studio put the brakes on the project, deciding it needed more time for development.

“In coordination with filmmakers, Universal has decided to release Jurassic Park 4 at a later date giving the studio and filmmakers adequate time to bring audiences the best possible version of the fourth installment in Universal’s beloved franchise,” said the studio in a statement.

Trevorrow, producer Frank Marshall and a crew have been working towards a June 24 start. Trevorrow is living in Hawaii and had been there for quite some time, working with his Safety Not Guaranteed writer Derek Connolly on a new script. But the studio only received their draft two days ago, according to several sources.

The move put in motion the studio development process and a new round of budgeting. It became clear that the start date and the release date would not be met under the new scenario and rather than risk the situation, Universal decided to postpone its much-needed franchise player.

First Behind-the-Scenes Photo from JURASSIC PARK 4

Last month, Safety Not Guaranteed helmer Colin Trevorrow was tapped to direct the Jurassic Park 4. Today, Trevorrow offers a major hint regarding the pic’s story, as he shared an image today from a location scout with the caption “Nublar,” which as we all know is the name of the island from the first Jurassic Park. Whether that means we’ll be returning to the old park for the full film or if it’s just a few scenes is unknown

With a June 2014 release date looming, Trevorrow is currently busy scouting locations for Jurassic Park 4 ahead of a likely fall production start date. He offered up an image from one of his scouts that showed an island setting and captioned the photo with the word “Nublar,” suggesting that the story of Jurassic Park 4 takes place on the same Isla Nublar from the first film.

JURASSIC PARK 4 Will Feature New Terrifying Dinosaur

Utahraptor-Possible-Jurassic-Park-4-Dragonlord.jpg

It was recently announced that Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Trevorrow would be taking on the challenge of bringing the T. Rex and the Velociraptor back to the big screen in Jurassic Park 4. The Jurassic Park movies made stars out of the T-Rex, the spitting Dilophosaurus, and the Velociraptor, which wasn't really a well known dino until after the movie came out. But from the sounds of it a new dinosaur star is going to be born in the fourth film, and apparently it's terrifying.

USA Today recently spoke with paleontologist Jack Horner, who served as the dinosaur adviser on the original films and is working on the new one, as well. In the interview, Horner reveals that there'll be a new dino, but wouldn't say what it would be. He teased, "I can't actually tell you who that will be, but you'll want to keep the lights on after you see this movie."

Colin Trevorrow Says No Feathered Dinos in JURASSIC PARK 4

Colin-Trevorrow-JP4-0321-Dragonlord.jpg

Among the many worries from fans for Universal's Jurassic Park 4 was the possibility that we could see dinosaurs covered in feathers, as opposed to dinos in their classic form. The last installment in the series, 2001's Jurassic Park III, featured velociraptors with feathers. However, director Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed), who was recently hired to helm Jurassic Park 4, has taken to his Twitter account to confirm that there will be "no feathers" in the sequel. Trevorrow was reportedly chosen due to his love of the original trilogy.

Jurassic Park 4 has a script written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes), with Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley on board as producers. With production rumored to begin late spring/early summer, the fourquel is slated for a June 13th, 2014 release.

It's Official: Colin Trevorrow Will Direct JURASSIC PARK 4

Colin-Trevorrow-Jurassic-Park-4-Dragonlord_zpsc8a91963.jpg

Late last year, director Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) was a dark horse candidate in the running for the director’s chair of Star Wars: Episode VII; now it looks as if he’ll be helming the fourth installment of the Jurassic Park series. Trevorrow had teased fans about directing a film with a significant fan base and the rumor mill quickly lumped him into the Star Wars discussion. Not long after that, word came out that Trevorrow would be writing and possibly directing a remake of Flight of the Navigator; nothing to scoff at, but certainly not Star Wars. With today’s news that he’ll be directing Jurassic Park 4, now we know the fan base he was hinting at all along.

Deadline reports that Trevorrow is the man to helm the return to Jurassic Park for Universal Pictures. The director made his feature debut at Sundance with Safety Not Guaranteed and has only a short, a documentary and a TV movie to his other directorial credits. Reported as being a big fan of the billion-dollar franchise, Trevorrow met with studio execs and filmmakers who “felt he would preserve and protect the characters in the story they created.” It goes without saying that this is a huge get for the young director.

While a 3D re-release of Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park, based on Michael Crichton’s novel, is opening in theaters starting April 5th, work can now move forward on Jurassic Park 4 scripted by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes). Frank Marshall is producing with Patrick Crowley, and Steven Spielberg is executive producer.

Producer Kathleen Kennedy Won't Return for JURASSIC PARK 4

Jurassic-Park-4-Kathleen-Kennedy-Dragonlord.jpg

Although a new dinosaur adventure will be hitting theaters on June 13, 2014 with Jurassic Park IV, it appears that one key member of the franchise's creative team won't be returning. Kathleen Kennedy will not be back as a producer as she's now busy overseeing the cinematic future of the Star Wars universe as co-chairman of Lucasfilm.

"No," Frank Marshall, Kennedy's husband and producing partner writes on Twitter. "Ms. Kennedy has moved onto Star Wars and will not be producing JP4. She's traded raptors for TIE fighters."

Details on the project are currently few, but Jurassic Park IV will be produced by Steven Spielberg with a director yet-to-be-named. It is also being planned for a 3D release. Currently unconfirmed, it is believed that the most recent draft of the sequel was scripted by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The original 1993 Jurassic Park will see a 3D re-release on April 5 of this year, also hitting IMAX 3D theaters.

Humanosaurus Concept Art for Scrapped JURASSIC PARK 4 Script

At one point, John Sayles (Lone Star) wrote a script for Jurassic Park 4 that took an Island of Doctor Moreau bent, and created genetically engineered human-dinosaurs mercenaries that could wield guns. What’s more dangerous than a velociraptor? A velociraptor with an AK-47. The project was eventually scrapped due in part to concept art by Carlos Huante that has now been leaked online. Some of it just looks like The Lizard from The Amazing Spider-Man, but there are some seeds of a cool idea, like the triceratops, since he’s the only one with opposable thumbs.

Universal Announces JURASSIC PARK 4 to Open on June 2014

Universal-Jurassic-Park-IV-Dragonlord.jpg

Universal Pictures just announced that Jurassic Park IV will open in 3D on June 13, 2014. While many are quick to speculate that Steven Spielberg will direct, having just shelved the sci-fi adaptation Robopocalypse for an indefinite period of time, no director is attached as of yet. Spielberg will return as a producer, however. Screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, both of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, just turned in a fresh draft of the film earlier this week. You can get a glimpse at what the original Jurassic Park looks like in 3D when it opens on April 5th, including a one-week IMAX run.

Producer Kathleen Kennedy previously spoke about the project in an interview with Steve at the end of 2011. Back then she said that Jurassic Park IV would take a “great script” to get off the ground, since the property was not originally intended to be a franchise. It seems like the execs are happy with Jaffa and Silver’s latest draft since a release date announcement is a strong showing of support.

Although Jurassic Park IV is definitely going to be released in 3D, producer Frank Marshall had previously commented that practical effects still resonate better with audiences and helps the actors perform, so there is hope that the entire thing won’t be green-screened.

JURASSIC PARK 3D to Get One-Week IMAX Release

JP-bandeau.jpg

Press Release: IMAX Corporation and Universal Pictures today announced that Steven Spielberg’s epic Jurassic Park will return to the big screen with a one-week 3D engagement in IMAX

Let's place bets on how they defeat the I-Rex..... Who wants to go first?

T-rex by a nick diaz type KO.
Like he's using his long reach to pepper him but will land big shots in between which will sapp I-rex's questionable cardio.
Then a sucker neck bite at the end.

What's funny is, no matter how big and nasty the new Rex is. Any modern military grade weapon would drop it in a few seconds. One or two well placed shots from a 20 mm cannon would wreck it, maybe even a .50 cal.

Why would you need a .50 BMG cartridge. African elephants and T-rex weigh about the same.

African elephants are regularly killed by rifles much weaker than .50 BMG. .375 H&H is a reliable elephant killer at 4600 ft pounds of energy. Some people use more power than is needed like a .460 Weather be that hits at 7500 ft pounds.

Large hunting rifles should be plenty.

On any military grade weapon I would disagree. Part of the reason for 5.56 was to be able to carry a lot of ammo it is a small cartridge. If you want to maximize the amount of ammo a person can carry you pick the weakest that can do the job but then it is borderline and humans do not weight as much as an elephant.

A bunch of guys with Elephant guns is adequately armed for T-rex.

I've never seen "early reviews" that weren't absolutely glowing. I'm hoping for better than average.

This is somewhat true. Most early reviews tend to be good, even if the film sucks. But I have seen some negative initial reviews before.

I bet they're saved by a T-Rex in a contained space with really small doors, like the first one. And it totally sneaks up in front of them again.

My guess.......

The Raptors and/or T-Rex (maybe together) will back the I-Rex up to....

...the water's edge. AND THEN.....

Best sequel in the franchise is like saying only third worst.
