Law Juneteenth as Federal Holiday

National would be great. NY moved in the right direction recently.

Would you like to join the celebration? We have beer and tacos.
Soul Food.
How is juneteenth NOT already a federal holiday? All of the bullshit we have holidays for and the day millions of people were liberated from bondage isnt one of them? What the fuck?
Millions of Black Americans so you kno

Supported. It’s a good holiday, it’s absurd we don’t already have one celebrating the end of slavery, and being the celebration of an event it doesn’t have the problem of celebrating a particular person—since all real people are inevitably fuckups in some way.

Also its name is ace. And easy to remember the exact day. The only problem is that fixed dates are trickier to schedule because you need holidays not to be midweek.

I'm going to think about this point for a while, really like this. Positive moments are truly celebration-worthy but celebration of an individual leads to an aggrieved population shining a spotlight on their negative traits/deeds in a less than constructive manner that evolves to cancellation/deletion for better or worse.

The fallibility of man makes a strong case that it's won again.

My workplace allowed people to take off today and it wouldn't count as an absence.

Half of our group wasnt there today.

I support adding the Holliday.
Do not support getting rid of columbus day.
Thats a banker holliday anyway. Most don't get a paid day off.

No problem with this being a descendant of slavery and all. Even a lot of conservatives would like to make this a National holiday

But I have a question: didn't we have a black president barely 5 years ago? Why didn't Obama push for this since his wife is also a descendant of slavery, too?

THIS is how you make a compelling argument for something. We all can agree slavery was wrong and celebrate it's demise as a country. No need to guilt trip or point fingers at anyone

Just to be clear, you think Juneteenth was made up by white people?

It has been, but it definitely has national historical value.
Just like kwanza

Just like some white people thinking reparations is the most important issue for black people

Just like some white people thinking black people only care about murder when its white on black

Its a made for tv storyline

A strawman, some would say

He did. It was shot down.

Sure why not? It's a good event to celebrate!

And on a selfish note:
I'm in favor of any Federal Holiday that grants me a free day off.

"WASHINGTON — Senators on Friday announced legislation to make Juneteenth, a widely observed holiday that marks the federal order to free slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865, a national holiday.

Also known as Emancipation Day, Black Independence Day or Jubilee Day, Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery after the Civil War, although President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had legally accomplished that within the Confederacy more than two years earlier. The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1865, abolished slavery throughout the entire United States."

How do you feel Sherbros? I mean I think it's a good idea. I think we should also remove Columbus day at the same time.
We should all thank President Donald Trump.

Trump Claims ‘Nobody Had Ever Heard Of’ Juneteenth Before He Made It ‘Very Famous’

President Trump took credit for popularizing Juneteenth in an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, stating that no one had ever heard of the June 19 holiday commemorating the emancipation of black slaves in the U.S. before he scheduled a political rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on that day, claiming, "I did something good: I made Juneteenth very famous

Government workers could use more time off paid for by taxpayers. I was just thinking how much I'd love my tax dollars to pay for more days off for beurocrats and politicians.
