Jose Aldo's smart defensive techniques vs calf kicks

It's one thing to know what to do, but actually implementing it is an entirely different matter. Very few fighters have the reflexes and balance that Aldo has, even at his advanced age. I've always marveled at his base; the guy is always on balance, which allows him to be offensive immediately after evading defensively. His fights against Frankie were a masterclass on balance and positioning.

Calves kicks became effective when MMA fighters started forgetting their Muay Thai roots. McGregor started an era of "Boxing/Karate" type strikers in MMA. Back in 2014, everyone started widening their stance, going southpaw and throw spinning back kicks/ straight lefts. If you guys remember, McGregor was shitting on Thai boxing back then and I really felt the effect of it in MMA gyms. The tide is shifting, new champion like Shevchenko, Adesanye, Yan and Gane are making Muay Thai shine again.

Even if fighters arent throwing the kicks I do think we are in an era of planeted feet and not much movement, specifically lateral movement.

I know it's the hipster thing to do but Moraes beat Aldo in a close fight. Not a robbery. There have been so many other robberies that just get forgotten about but the Aldo fanboys really really push this narrative, my word. That being said, WAR Aldo.
Not a narrative, that was one of the worst decisions in recent memory, majority of people had Aldo winning that, I'm a fan of both guys but yeah felt the need to put my 2 cents in.

Just want to say, what Aldo doing is real GOAT shit. Since that second Max loss, he's fought nine times, losing twice. Both losses? Current title holders. Every fight was against someone ranked. Aldo has fought more ranked guys since the Max loss than Khabib did in his whole career. I'm not trying to hate on Khabib who is a generational talent, but just putting it in perspective.
Bingo. This is real GOAT shit. He could have retired after the Mendes fight with a super clean record as the #1 p4p fighter in the world, but it would not be that real warrior/bushido shit, and certainly would not make for as an epic movie. You only find out what a man is made of when everything goes against him and he falls from his high place.

Aldo's career as of late proves why he was so special in the first place; the guy is a true warrior and dedicated to his craft beyond a normal person's comprehension. The way of the warrior is a life style for him, and the fans realize that and that is why he is so loved despite having many down falls in his career.

Aldo embodies the term 'lifelong martial artist.'. The guy is all about respect, the craft, proving and challenging himself. He's one of the most sincere people in MMA.

When a guy loses and falls off of his perch, you see what he's really made of. Everyone is always so concerned with that perfect record - thanks modern day boxing - and I'm more concerned with strength of schedule. Just look at who Aldo has fought in his career and especially lately when his athleticism has faded. People really need to appreciate him more. A real, true, undeniable legend of this sport. He will lose to Yan again if they fight. He might lose to TJ or Sandhagen next. I don't give a shit. Props for just getting back on the horse and getting back to the top.

There's some good information in the video on the technical nuances of Aldo's technical kickboxing game. Hope others don't dismiss this breakdown so flagrantly.
you can tell who watched the vid or not bc there is really just 2 main things he goes over that Aldo does for this. That little pivot is genius. The floppy leg, bending it in toward your other knee is a classic i learned from a dutch kickboxing coach. He was affiliated with pat Barry somehow at the time (2007ish)

I think his point is it's easier said than done, it looks simple but pivoting and moving like that is hard to do in a fight. It's the same as saying why don't people just use the same technique Aldo uses to defend takedowns, he makes that look easy too? the answer is because they can't.

exactly it's like asking why doesn't everyone make people miss like Floyd or Sweet P did? The movements they are doing are easy to emulate in shadow boxing, but it's another thing to do it at the right time during a fight.

I think most fighters arent even trying this. Its not like they try but fail to pull it off, they dony bother to do it. Some of Them like conor, their stance is all wrong.

They don't pivot like he does avoid takedowns or to set up counters; it's not some secret technique. It's just really hard to do.

It is a secret technique. Not literally but its the thing to train to beat the new meta. Its hard for them to do because you cant teach a lot of these old dogs new tricks and because theure not used to it. Nate diaz doesnt even check regular leg kicks let alone try something like this.

it's not new. And Nate won the fight with Pettis largely due to injuring him by checking a kick.

It's weird how Doostin didn't even attempt any calf kicks in the 3rd match, that I can remember... I think, a leg kick or two, but Conor didn't seem to do anything different, probably would have worked again

Dude isnt a veteran genius for nothing, here, just watch jack black's breakdown of Aldo's high iq defense. Calf kicks wouldnt be so effective if people would adopt this type of defense. José Aldo has shown more improvement than Conor McGregor in this regard.

Seriously, what a fantastic video

Aldo is a monster. I was so skeptical of him moving down. I feel like he's lost some power and isn't the same, but he is still changing fight to fight, and I think he's gonna fight Yan again.
What a fighter.
I thought the same about his power, tbh I haven't seen many of Fonts fights so I'm not sure how good his chin is but I've never seen Aldo drop someone almost every round :O Aldo seemed so strong that fight, just a bit sluggish

Preach

I’ve always liked Aldo but his post McGregor era has made me appreciate him more. Some fighters are never the same after that kind of defeat but not Aldo. The guy reinvented himself. His boxing went from good to phenomenal. Less kicks, less explosive strikes but 100% controlled savagery.

His last few years have cemented him in my personal top 5 goats.

Amazing fighter
I agree. He matured as a fighter and has achieved the rare feat of reinventing himself and remaining competitive 17 fooking years into his violent career.

Not that it isnt good info I'd agree but its not some kind of magic bullet for other fighters to stop calf kicks.

I usually take fighter breakdowns with a grain of salt, seems like most of them are dudes who've never actually fought trying to describe shit they don't really understand fully. But this one was actually really good.

Aldo Bless

No one said it was. Listen I'm just trying to point out that there are subtle techniques that Aldo has worked on that make him an excellent kickboxer. These are things any fighter can work and improve upon... we may not all be Aldo but we can learn from him for sure.

Nah, it's directly a narrative. There have been many worse decisions. Aldo fans just go extra hard for him. Is normal.
