There is a very big difference between Shogun, who would end up fighting at 185... and Tom Aspinall, who is a natural HW at 261 pounds

And he's only been to the second round three times with a 33% win rate.

These fighters are worlds apart, regardless of how bad jones' cardio COULD be at HW, he is infinitely more proven and tougher. The kid might be fast, but that shit doesn't last. What wrestlers has he even fought? Gane and Almeida are both really interesting matchups for Aspinall, idk why everyone is constantly trying to compare someone to Jones. For all we know Gane takes him out and Almedia actually exploits his grappling defense, making the interim so soon was dumb.

I'd pick Jones, way more proven. Tom is his best challenge at HW though because he is fast and dynamic.. Sergei and Francis would have been easy pickings for Jones, big guys just loading up and loading up.. Jones has far too much skill. Tom will be a better opponent

I'd pick Aspinall since I think him and Sergei both have more than enough size and striking ability to bully Jones on the feet but Aspinall's defensive wrestling is a massive question mark and we've never seen anybody match Aspinalls speed so I doubt he could KO blitz other speedy HW's like Jones and Gane.

The Blaydes fight ended in a injury so we never got to see Tom have to push his cardio or defensive wrestling and Jones is without a doubt capable of putting it to the test even if his stand up is regressed. I actually believe Sergei would be a tougher test for Jones since he's measured and there's less questions about how he'd handle a wrestler since he dispatched Blaydes and Jones' catching Sergei for a KO isn't very likely.

Did you just call Jones a fast HW?

Did you see the beginning of the Gane fight? He looked like he was walking through waist high mud.

He may have been fast 5 years ago, but he has only a single outing as a HW, and fast is one of the last words I would use to describe how he looked in that fight.

Jones (-140)
Aspinall (+120)

Jones is a very slight favorite.

My money would be on Aspinall though, especially with Jones coming back from Pec surgery

How much do we know of Aspinall's bottom game or TDD in MMA?

Unless I'm mistaken, only Spivac has made a concentrated effort to take down Aspinall in the UFC and he defended but so did Gane.

I do believe jones would beat Aspinall. I also believe they will not fight. Jon is looking for a that payday and legacy match against stipe and then he retires. He should beat aspinall, but aspinall is a far riskier matchup than an old and retired stipe.
