Remember how many fans Anderson had here before he lost to Chris? It was one specific contingent of fans... people who took great emotional comfort online in grafting onto a guy with the most media praise. Because they had no personality/values of their own so had a real deep psychological need to be attached to the glory of someone else.

As soon as... and I'm talking AS SOON AS... he lost and that media praise shifted... they all disappeared. Overnight. What was once a daily deluge of Anderson HL gifs became nonexistent by the time he fought Nick Diaz.

Jon fans are exactly the same, except the guy had the good sense to drop the sport five years ago when he knew it was passing him by. But because he dropped the sport (minus two comedically doctored fights) the grafters get to still masturbate online to posting his gifs from a decade ago and pretending that if they post them enough online it makes them less of a loser in their own personal life.

It is a very peculiar form of fan. PR posters + people with very little going for them personally would be the only two segments in my mind. Historically proven to be the most shallow fan possible, as we saw with the Anderson exodus.
