Jon Jones doesn’t get enough credit for becoming two-weight UFC champion.

Jon’s critics claimed for years that Jon would never have the courage to fight and challenge any top HWs, let alone challenge for the belt.

Enter Ciryl Gane. In his prime. The new “next generation” of athletic HWs. Yes, he had just lost a razor close split decision to Ngannou (who was knocking everyone out).

A lot of people on this forum and in general were arguing that Gane should have beaten Ngannou, making him the rightful undisputed HW champ.

Jon walks in the octagon after a 4 year hiatus, and makes Gane cry uncle in 3 minutes.

Extremely impressive arc to the end of Jon’s career.
Jones critic checking in. It's because he's a career long cheater. Not any of the other noise.

Beating Gane for the belt matters as much as beating Al Iaquinta for the lightweight belt expect for the fact that Khabib actually proved he was champ by defending his belt against the best available fighters.

Wrong. Lot of people called it a squash match

Here's the poll that was on Sherdog.

41% thought Jones would win. 45% thought Gane would win. 14% were undecided. That's nearly 60% of the respondents who weren't willing to say Jones would win.

Sure, NOW it's the most obvious thing in the world according to everyone here. But that wasn't what people thought going into the fight.

Well I know people said gane would get owned quickly. I said gane would get beaten quickly and I can prove it.

Stipe would beat gane today.

That’s just how I see it

That bisping looked horrid and should of lost the decision to dan.gane was a killer and still is

Yes hes a killer which is why its likely he had an off day. I highly doubt a rematch would end the same way.

he's a burden in the HW division. Strip him already.

No, the narrative was that Jones couldn't take down Reyes and Santos, had degressed as a wrestler and fighter and was gonna get picked apart with ease by Gane who most still considered the best HW striker. You're just trying to give yourself intentional amnesia.
Oh stop, that’s what YOU thought, and that’s like just your opinion man.

Gane is better than people admit. It's insane to toss a narrative around like he's a whitebelt that anyone can take down and sub. If you read the lead up to Jones fight, it's funny how people breakdown how good his distance management was, his size/strength, submissions and grappling he's shown. Yet right after the fight people act like he's the biggest can in UFC.

Why would he get credit for cherry picking the Gane fight? GSP got a lot of flak for cherry picking the Bisping fight. Why shouldn't Jones get the same flak?

Imagine if GSP had beat Bisping and then instead of retiring, sat out for 18 months and decided to defend his belt against Anderson Silva. Silva was on a 1-1-4 run at that point and well out of the title picture. Sure, at one point he was a legend and at one point GSP vs Silva was the fight to make, but it was well past that point in 2017-2018. It would be a disgrace to leave Whittaker/Romero on the sidelines for all that time with an interim championship to fight over.

If you would criticize GSP for this and yet praise Jones, then you are literally a braindead Jones nut-hugger. That's it.

If his dramas didn’t happen outside the octagon then no one would bat an eye over his ped use and would call him a goat.

Just like all the sherdog favourite roid to the gills of the 2000s.

My personal opinion: Jones gets far too much credit for becoming a 2-division champion. It just doesn't hold up to scrutiny. It was a highly manufactured path to success. An easy win with no resistance offered from his opponent. Just as expected and just as planned. I'm pretty easily impressed as a fight fan, and I never found this impressive. Jones has the natural frame of a heavy weight and could have moved there at any time if he wanted to. I think most people wowed by this are easily caught up in the cosmetics of it all.

Jon ducked the lineal heavyweight champion for a decade and then decided once he was gone to move up and grab the belt. He also had tape on Gane to develop a gameplan because of the Ngannou fight, and it was also his easiest matchup. He never beat the champ to become the champ. It's a fake title. No more real than Aspinall's, that's why they have to unify it, both literally and figuratively speaking.

No, not 'at the time' but in hindsight.

Majority of sherdoggers thought Gane was too dangerous and was going to smoke him. But lets rewrite history instead.
No. Seems like ur misremembering. Sure some may have thought that, but Jones was the favorite in their fight

I give him credit for winning 2 belts and defending thats more than Conor ever did.
But its not really impressive. He beat Gane, sure a good win, then sits out for years wanting to fight old Stipe. I get the "legacy" and all but still..
IF he beats Stipe and THEN defend again... Lets talk.
Rent free. What the hell does Conor have to do with anything?

Well you see there is a massive difference between Sherdog and reality. I was talking about the perception on sherdog, and I was right. In which world do you think Jones was seen as the favorite? Certainly not on this site?
